During the horrors of the dark age of the "Inquisition," the Jews of Spain and Portugal were under tremendous persecution to relinquish their practice of Judaism and forcibly become "Catholics" under penalty of torture and execution for those who refused to comply. Many fled and many secretly continued to practice their Jewish traditions as "hidden Jews."
