I am Andrew Waller. I am the guest host, the lucky guest host filling in for the usual host, the wonderful Carrie Clark, on a wonderful show alternative to what she lets me sit in a few times a year or so and I am always pleased to do so. For the next two hours we're going all over that musical map, all over that musical globe, all over the musical world going to play a wide variety of stuff. It's going to lean in certain directions. I don't think I'm going to have a fair bit of jazz type stuff today but there are plenty of other things as well. I'll turn it off to what is sponsored by Highline Brewing as noted. Find folks down in Inglewood. We'll talk about more about them as the show goes on. We just want to get some thanks out to them right off the bat. Without further ado then, let's get started. What do we need right now? I think we need bagpipes. The one that we heard this track from was called Serpent's Tears. The actual song we heard when I was drunk. I always got a throw in a song about killing someone here and there, right? Starting off, that said, was to make a read quartet from the three plus three album from a little earlier this year. We heard exploring outward, phonemblest, slash, phonemblest fever. Nice ending on that one, I thought. It sort of came crashing down without crashing down. Definitely, sort of where experimental meets jazz, that middle section in the track. I've heard this before, of course, but I thought, "Oh yeah, it does get kind of jazzy there. Nice little swing to it." As it went to far and wide other places. Hope you enjoyed all that. This is Alternative Twat on CJSW. Alternative Twat is sponsored by Highline Brewing. A fine folks down there Highline Brewing has, well, losing food. Down in Inglewood. Address 1318, 9th Avenue Southeast. It's open right now. Close to 10 p.m. today. Thanks to them for sponsoring the show. More about Highline. Over the next little while, we go for almost another hour and a half here to 6 p.m. Mountain Time. And we pass things off to more shows here on Calgary's campus and community radio station. Moving along with the next number, here's something, well, it features the sitar. And it features, in fairly early usage of it, the Mugh Synthesizer. I am speaking about a record by Ananda Shankar, nephew of Ravi, son of Uday. In the late 60s, he moved to the U.S. He wasn't. He was Jimmy Hendrix's sitar teacher. He did a record. Self-titled, Ananda Shankar. He does some pop tunes there, some great versions of Jump and Jack Flash and Light My Fire. On one hand, they're really cheesy. On the other hand, they're really awesome. And then a bunch of original tracks. One traditional tune and then a bunch of original tracks, which are actually kind of ground breaking again, in part with the... In part because of the use of Mugh Synthesizer along with the sitar and sort of basic rock instrumentation. We're going to hear a piece from that. I've played it at some point on some show on CJSW, but it's a good one. We're going to play it again. The song is called "Minimorphises." Ananda Shankar from his self-titled first album. He later went back to India and did a lot of stuff with film music. Pestaway? 1999? Something like that? A number of years back. But he did some really nifty sounds. Again, mostly in film and TV. Some of which has appeared in North American movies and television shows as well. At any rate, this is when he wasn't doing that. He was on his solo rock career, for lack of a better description. "Minimorphises is a tune. Ananda Shankar's the artist. I'll turn if to what is the stage. Isn't it a show? CJSW is the station. Enjoy, please." You're my only hope. [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] That's that started off with, well it started off loud, and then did they go gentle, kind of wind gentle, did they go ambient, kind of wind dampened, let's talk about it, let's discuss. Everything began with Surfangamora from Colormy Psycho, Calgary band from way back when, from the record pretend I'm a father which I think came out, came out in 1988, that's right, I remember buying it at that time. Anyway, Surfangamora was the tune of the band. Surfangamora was the tune, rock and tune about surfing the Sin City, I guess there's no Surfans Sodom, just Surfangamora. After that we went ambient, dark and ambient from Volkertalanko, from his recent record, Music for Grey Skies, I say recent, I like to say the latest, but recent, the guy puts out a lot of records. I just know, I don't think Music for Grey Skies is the most recent one, I think it's the most, it's not the latest record, it's not the most recent one, but it is a recent one, there we go. What we heard from that was called Dark Clouds in My Brain. After that, a short little tune from Deep Purple, the rock band from their first lineup, Deep Purple Mark 1 from the third record put out by that lineup called, just Deep Purple. The piece was called Fault Line, and then back to jazz, again more of an atmospheric tune from Pete LaRocca, jazz drummer put out three records under his own name, two in the 60s, one in the 90s, I think. I got the two from the 60s, they're both really good. We heard a track from the second one called Turkish Women at the Bath, the piece was called Bliss. Pete LaRocca also worked as a taxi driver while he was being a jazz drummer in the 60s, apparently made more money to get a taxi driver than he did playing jazz drumming, even though he had a name and was putting out records of his own and was on other people's records, making more money as a taxi driver I read, and then he later became an attorney.
