You have a TV? No, I just like to read the TV guide read the TV guide don't need a TV Hello and welcome to TV guidance counselor I am can read the TV guidance counselor and you're probably wondering why this episode is being released on a Saturday morning Instead of the traditional Wednesday. Well, I'll tell you. It's a special edition Welcome to the Saturday morning special edition with my guest this week Sean Sullivan Sean is the reason this show exists He's a very funny comedian and a good friend of mine and Sean suggested the format for this show So I finally managed to get him over the house and we decided to do something different We didn't look at prime time like we normally do we looked at one Saturday morning and one year and talked about some of our favorite Cartoons some of our least favorite cartoons and a lot of the weirdness that it's Saturday morning So please enjoy this Saturday morning special edition with Sean Sullivan With mr. Johnson. Hi, everybody Alliteration rich episode Sean Sullivan Saturday morning with Sean Sullivan a show that will probably never be on TV Because I don't think no would be a children's presenter I also don't think they do Saturday morning anymore. They really don't they really don't a lot of Yukio and Dragon Ball Z although I have noticed Saturday mornings making somewhat of a comeback like on on the UPNs and CWs They show sort of old Cartoon Network shows on Saturday morning. Yes, Justice League But they aren't not on the not on your ABC your NBC No, the network's just through the news on weekends That's what you want the news all the time because you can't get the news not on TV It's difficult to find out and it's hard man. Not a weekend. You got the newspaper coming through Yeah, you can't look it up on your phone. So you picked a Saturday morning from 1991. Yes, I would have been duh duh duh duh duh duh duh Poi eight years old eight years old. That's prime Saturday morning viewer. Yes, and I was still watching Saturdays at this time I was 11. Yeah, I still would have to I could have gone anywhere from probably comfortably 87 to 94 yeah, and that's kind of a prime time for Saturday morning cartoons. There was some yeah It was some good stuff. I got there's some there's some choice picks on this. Yeah, and Saturday sort of ended around 96 Fox kids held on for a little bit longer But for the most part it was pretty much dead at that point Yeah, this wasn't the strong Fox kids that I thought it was gonna be no this was sort of the beginning of Fox kids So in 1991 you had Before we had the Batman animated series is before X-Men I don't think tiny tunes or anything like that tiny tunes hadn't started at I think that was 92 So 92 sort of one that next wave started and it was before Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon really had started there Original programming which is one of the things that sort of killed Saturday morning But so you picked September 28th 1991. So this is the first week of a lot of these new shows Yes, and we started at 7 a.m. So we said 7 a.m. Which is which is rough I don't think the CBS to me I always remember they were the first ones that started and they were the first of the major channels that had a show They had the little mermaid on but I was yeah gonna watch the little mermaid the animated series No, I used to get up at like 5 a.m. On Saturday. I say up earlier on Saturday. You're insane You're insane for I get up at 5 a.m. Now, but it's you have two totally different reasons Yeah, so I used to watch there used to be a show called Captain Bob on that was produced by WCVB Channel 5 and actually earned a lot of other markets in the 60s and it was an old sea captain who drew pictures of animals Yeah, I remember Captain Bob. So Captain Bob actually is on at 6 a.m. On in 1991 in this edition So I definitely would have watched that to predate the 70s. Yeah, Captain Bob would have been one my uncle's or my dad Would have told me about cuz I'm sure they watched it. Yeah, it was kind of like the local camping kangaroo for this area Not even it wasn't it was literally just an old man in a room drawing. It was like a drawing instructional show Yeah, I do remember this yeah I used to draw a lot of fish and I remember my dad was really mad at him cuz my dad was like I sent in tons of pictures and he never put him on Jesus. Yeah, it was pretty nice. Dad holds a grudge He really does. So 70 a.m. You didn't go with a little murder. What'd you go with? We went pop-eye Classic classic. It's insane. It's an insane show. It probably would have been 50s pop-eye TV cartoons. Yeah, this is a depression era Yeah, I do in the 80s. There was a show called pop-eye and Sun. Yep, not good. No, there was a big and Sun Trend on Saturday mornings in the 80s. Yeah, well you had like all this you had Flintstone kids and James Bond Jr And you had pink panther and Sun. Yeah, and the boy remember the potato head kids. Yes That was one of the worst ones I think I think it was one of the worst ones I you know, I don't remember the potato head kids. I had potato head kids Yeah, they came with I think it was McDonald's or Burger King had potato head kids Yeah And we had and we had the toys and I don't remember I was I was kind of confused of the where they came from yeah who they were because I don't know how potatoes reproduce No, well, I know I don't think they reproduce themselves. They just grow on in the ground It's probably a sexual who the fuck knows how potatoes. Yeah, I don't know I'm not a farmer put your last name Sullivan. And so it makes me you wouldn't understand how potatoes will make No, just why your family moved here. That's why we are here now today. Yes So I I don't know if I would have gone with pop-eye. There's some good stuff here including a romper room and Kids Club, which was usually the weirdest low-level cartoons It was local and it was usually a local host and it would be the cheapest cartoons they could possibly get see I look at the TV guy and I see something like kids club. That's got no description I don't give a shit about that. You need it to be money. I know what pop-eye Okay, I know what I'm getting. You're going with brand name recognition I'm getting a guy that eats spinach and he fights with a big fat guy over a super skinny lady Yeah, fair enough fair enough. I my favorite pop-eye character Whimby Eugene the Jeep you gene the Jeep. Yeah, he's a magical dog that disappears in things. Oh, yeah I don't think I knew that guy's name. You have no Eugene the Jeep snail and the schmoo is pretty good He showed up in some of the episodes. Yeah, the Eugene the Jeep is like the great gazoo of Just like a magical figment guy. There's no reason to be there. Yeah, but he's fantastic. So seven thirty. What'd you go with? I went with there was a choice between way cool or scratch now They seem to be the same exact show right and this is the debut of both these shows. Yeah, so it's a tough pick I know I noticed scratch comes back later on in the day, but I guess pick it later So scratch is a weekly series featuring reports on people places and issues of importance to young adults Not tell me what what is way cool about so way cool is a weekly series of light-hearted sketches and music that focuses on issues That are important to young people. So once for young adults People so that that is a distinction you make about three months I would say so they also distinguish that that way cool is distinguished as a children's show Whereas scratch is just a magazine. Mm-hmm. So I think once for teens and once for tweens I think at eight years old I probably would go for the one for tweens I think you would think that what are the issues of the day 1991 that are gonna affect young so for way cool It's probably stuff like stranger danger like Kuwait. It's probably not quick. Maybe scratch would talk about Kuwait Yeah, I think that my last grads probably AIDS or my god Kuwait getting AIDS or drugs would be a big one little nose candy. Yeah, I wish I had done the research. I wish I had had the Foresight to pick any issue that would have had Saturday morning TV all starts to the rescue Well, that never aired on Saturday morning with yesterday. No, it aired and prime time in most places Did it yeah, it was so Saturday morning all starts to rescue which you can probably watch in its entirety on YouTube was Very good and you should because you need to live you need to live in this world Yeah, it was the simulcast on all the networks. Yes. Yep and Fox and a couple that's why I think it was on Saturday mornings Well, it was called Saturday morning all starts to the rest. Maybe it was in prime Yeah, it is pretty good. So it's an anti drug thing. It's it's when it was huge I don't see any anti drug stuff anymore all the PSAs So I still watch Saturday morning sometimes you your kids aren't old enough Yeah, watch it, but they do dump all the PSAs are during Saturday morning. They still have them They still have them, but they're not about drugs anymore. They're literally like a fat-ass go outside They're all about like obesity is obesity is the real epidemic. How long you know might be good if you did some speed Yeah, take that cocaine and clean the fucking house There's all kinds of stuff for like kids playing video games There's one of my favorites is there's two favorites one of them with Hillary Duff who I love of course And it's a campaign for kids to stop calling things gay Yeah, he's not relevant at all it has a website called that's not cool calm boy And it's set up by the government in the first ad it's these two like 13-year-old girls buying clothes She's like what do you think of this one? She goes it looks gay and the other girls like it's so gay and then Hillary Duff comes out and goes when you say something's gay Do you know what you say and it's like don't call things gay? So that's one of them and then the other one is this kid playing video games as friend comes over and he goes I just played the coolest game I went in a stream of water and I saw dogs and there are animals and whatever. He's like oh, what's this game called? He's like my dad took me. Yeah, it's pretty bad pretty bad So these were all about drugs and AIDS and strangers molesting you while they're on drugs and giving you yes very different world Yes, very good. So I think those probably would have been the issues I however speaking of issues would have gone with toxic crusaders. Yeah, I saw that Did you ever watch that toxic crusade? I I get it confused because toxic Avenger was also a cartoon at some point called toxic crusaders Oh, it's the same thing. Yeah, I probably should have picked that It's a it's an unusual move and at the toxic Avenger for people aren't familiar was a trauma film New York's trauma studios a very R rated very bad taste to horror comedy with lots of boobs in it Lots of violence. It's very gross. That movie became a children's cartoon series. Well, there's a there's a lot of There's a this is the time of movie adaptations into cartoons. Yes, you had Rambo Which is another R rated movie that became a children's cartoon. I we I don't want to spoil a lot But I have some on my list. Okay. I have some movies turned into So but toxic crusaders was kind of a fun show, but it was in the early 90s There was a huge wave of environmentalism. Yeah, tune so I not didn't plan it I would have picked having planet of the two you can be one to cuz say that our planet is the thing to do I don't know the rise looting and polluting is not the way shown. Oh, that's right planet has to say the power is yours I remember one of them was in they all had the one kid who had heart. Yeah, so it was it was wind water Earth fire and in the South American kid had heart in a monkey Which is really everybody thought like I he's got the worst ring, but he got the monkey to I also liked the Russian girl Who was water? She was my favorite of the planet. I used to I you know who I liked the villain with the hair over She was voiced by the woman who played Lois Lane on the Superboy TV boy. Oh boy. That did it for me Yeah, I don't know why she was an evil environment eco-terrorist. It was the asymmetrical Burned off, but her hair covered it. So it's fine. She had an asymmetrical haircut. She was she you're not wrong there I think I would definitely go with with her out of everyone on that show. Yeah So there's also a terrible show that I used to watch on Disney Channel, which they don't hear anymore And it's absolutely terrifying called Dumbo's Circus. Yeah, I live action. There were two a hundred acre wood was in there as well Yes, which is the other live action. Yeah, Dumbo's Circus is insane and it also had a weirdly Christian message I don't remember that. I wouldn't have watched that at this time I would have watched that when I was younger cuz it was on every day every day and we're enough to mouse their size Yeah, my day would have been This is a before probably preschool preschool or before I was in school. It would have been Dumbo's Circus 100 acre wood Like to the point where I didn't realize that Winnie the Pooh was animated and that was weird to you when you saw that It was just like wow, that's weird that they made a cartoon that they adopted this documentary But yeah, 100 and monster size and Dumbo's Circus is the craziest because none of those characters at least 100 acre wood They spoke they spoke but they were also in Winnie the Pooh. Yeah, that's like they were Somebody took Dumbo's Circus and they were like let's take this sad movie and then we'll just add in a whole shit ton of characters that weren't in the film You know who I hated the most out of everyone on Dumbo's Circus Probably gonna know man. No, I don't remember the orangutan that played the Calliope. Yes. I hated him So I don't like Calliope music to this day probably because of I would think that's probably it So 8 a.m. Captain Planet is on. I don't know if you pick them. No, what'd you go with we stuck with the Disney Channel? Wuzzles Wuzzles a show that's very fondly remembered by many people and weirdly and I might be getting the episode count a little bit wrong But there's only 18 episodes. It's not a lot you you had it This is kind of that was one of the first things I borrowed from you when we met Yes So we're two things the reason that we are friends is because my whole life I have had in my head from when I was a child. I've had just like three seconds of this image of a guitar being put down and then People getting sucked into a TV flip side a mirror. I don't know what it was, but this is in my head I just have this small segment. It's just a guitar gets put down people get sucked into a TV And then they it's like I didn't and then they were in a sci-fi cartoon and you're oh, yeah kid video Yeah And this is I wanted to burst into tears because I was just like it's like closure Yeah, it was like one of those lifelong mysteries. I was like I'm never going to know What this is from my video to my radio and then you let me borrow it and I was like this is unwatchable I can't listen. It's pretty exciting. I think he made me a CD of the music. Yeah, I got the LP which only came out in Israel I had to get it from a guy from Israel and I got a good story where Robbie wrist was on that show Yeah, cuz in Oliver, I'm a pretty bunch and every episode they did a couple covers of some hits of the day But then they would have a live-action music video at the end of an original song and in the song Video Romeo 20,000 lines of wrist, but there's a they they're in a studio and there's little like a chiron Under because they're shooting a video. Yeah, that looks like nonsense and one of them is says see you balls And so what Robbie wrist told me was that in that episode The Israelis who financed the show who were some shady underground characters Yeah, basically gave them a budget and said if you don't do this show for this budget. I'll cut your balls off So they put the phrase cut your balls everywhere they could in that show that's great hidden in different areas in that show But kid video fantastic stuff the Wuzzles was a Disney show was one of Disney's first television cartoons. It's great The animation still looks great. It is good a good looking show Disney had a good tactic in the mid-80s where Movies for Disney were tanking. Yep. The black cauldron was a huge bomb But a great movie in my opinion. Yeah, Disney was not do people forget this is not doing well Disney didn't really come back Into the little mermaid in 1989 right so in the early to mid-80s like 84 85 Disney decided to move to television Animation and would do high quality television animation. Yeah, which seems like a weird thing to be innovated with no But I remember the the after school it'd be duct tails and shipping there was two rangers Yeah, and then dark wing duck. Yeah, I got dark wing duck is on my list of coming up So they so the first two shows they did were the gummy bears bouncing here. Yeah, that's also a really nice looking show - yes Yes, yes, and the best show based on a candy. Yes, and I doubt Twizzler kids was not Warheads the animated series you weren't you weren't a big fan of peanut butter cups peanut butter cups was pretty good But it was a little too dark for most But the wuzzles what people don't remember was about characters that were two animals in one which is insane now that you think back on It was like a bumble lion bumble lion and hippopotam. No, she was a rabbit hippopotamist Yep, but also had wings which never really and it was a kangaroo and something L. Aru is an elephant Yeah, yeah, and there was a monkey who was a rhinoceros. Yeah key. That was a very very weird show strange And yeah, but I remember it fondly so I Definitely would have gone with so first of all they were airing an hour of toxic crusaders So there was a seven thirty and eight o'clock times crusaders, but that's a weird hour pairing - that didn't go the whole it is a really weird Hour, but on Fox that morning was another show based on an R8 and harm movie killer tomatoes and I didn't see killer tomatoes God damn it Absolutely would have gone killer tomatoes now this was based more based on the sequel return to the killer tomatoes Which starred George Clooney and John Aston? Yeah, then the original I believe the cartoon was returning this color tomatoes It was and then they removed the return off to second. They still use the same song. They did redid I remember that show with fuzzy tomato. It had a toy line They really really promoted the show. It was also one of two shows that used to have a CGI Element to it which was extremely innovative at the time the other show was beetle juice every week on beetle juice They would have a short fully computer generated segment during the show and that was a huge gimmick that they yeah I don't know if I think I remember that yeah killer tomatoes had computer generated aspects of the show And they made a big deal out of it at the time. Mm-hmm, which was funny that they were like just we'll just tell people We made part of this with computers and everyone will watch it. Yeah, that's all we need. It did work It was on it was one of the original Fox kids shows. Yes. Fox launched their their say. No, I didn't see that I would but I still probably would have picked wuzzles Because just because you were it was also probably a higher quality show Yeah, and I'm also eight years old and I can't appreciate that the killer tomatoes was a movie true So I don't have that nostalgia factor true. I'm just like it's funny that there are animals that are two animals and one Animal two times the fun. It's wrapped up and rolled into one. It's funny So eight thirty would you go with? There was a toss-up. I ultimately went with Bobby's world But mother goose and grim was also on which was a good show. Yeah, very very short-lived mother goose yeah No, it wasn't it was not very popular. I enjoyed the newspaper strip mother. Yeah. No, that's why that's why I pay I don't remember watching the show so much, but I definitely had a collection of comic strips and I was like this is pretty funny stuff There were two comic strips that attempted to have Saturday morning cartoons They didn't go the normal comic strip route which was primetime specials and holiday specials Which almost every other comic strip did yes on the wake of peanuts, but there was a robot man Which I was a robot man was a robot man cartoon. It was very very short-lived. I loved it I thought it was really cool robot man and what did robot man turn into what comic strip is it? I don't like robot man. You know why I don't like robot man. I don't like his buddy. Oh the dog. No the guy Oh, okay. I don't like that guy. Yeah. No, I don't think you're alone. I don't think robot man I feel like that's the kind of guy that's like he'll like expose himself to the elementary school That's what I just got the impression of with robot man when I was growing up. I did not care for robot man I didn't care that's fair enough. You need to take a stance on some things We uh when I was growing up I worked with the local cable access station Yeah, and there was a show called the rumble seat which was a wrestler named Tony rumble who's no longer with us Who actually worked in the deli counter just like the rest of her and the show was him reading the newspaper every week And that was the show and every week in ours where I grew up for about six months There was in the police log this guy who would go to this local Not amusement park playground and get his dick out. Okay. I thought we were I thought we were going rumble robot man somehow This you reminded me that so you do this every week and Tony rumble was just Live it that I couldn't find this guy and he decided to take the law into his own hands Yeah, stake out this place and he caught the guy good for you And there's a big controversy about how we shouldn't have vigilante justice But I bring it up because he introduced me to several phrases for what this guy did that I had never heard before Number one snap in his carrot. Yeah. Yeah, I never heard that one Number two whipping up a batch Well, that one makes sense. Yeah, that makes us the full phrase was whipping up a batch of baby batter Of course, and finally this one was very weird making the quilt quiver that Makes sense, but not in the context of a playground. No, not in the context of playground at all not at all So that was the rumble seat. So you didn't like robot man. You would have gone mother gruesome group of Bobby's world Yeah, and I would have gone Bobby's world Bobby's world is and always will be the greatest thing how we Mandel has ever Yeah, it's a good show. It is a good show. Yeah, it's a good quality film show And everyone always remembers the one episode with the song underwater fish don't stink. Yep That was probably the most famous thing from Bobby's work Yeah, and this was what kicked off a series of cartoons of adult comedians playing child versions of themselves You say a series I can think of I can release three three I got three three and I'm counting Bobby's world I'm thinking from four then with counting Bobby's world. You have little bill. I got little bill Cosby little Rosie I got life with Louie life with Louie life with Louie was on it this time. Oh, my father. God. I love you Anderson impression I'm Louie. I met Louie Anderson. He is a sad man He seems like a very sad man hilarious. I always thought he was so funny. He's so funny He has a very small cameo role in first beelers day off He was the headliner when we went to that festival in Nebraska. Yeah, he was the the host for the finals and I was sitting I was bummed out I Didn't make the finals of this contest. I'm stuck in Nebraska I had thrown a shit fit that day and I'm sitting in the theater and I'm just like now We got to sit through fucking Louie Anderson and I was just like and that was so pleasantly surprised I turned my whole day around really funny guys. He mopping the sweat from his brow. The horse is a huge dude He's just gotten bigger. I'd like to see him and John Panette just have at it He was there was a guy that we were with it was one of the guys that was in the festival was super into programs He was an AA and it was in over readers anonymous and we went to dinner one time and after dinner He was on the phone calling his sponsor to buy out everything Oh everything you ate that he ate. So he went up to Louie Anderson backstage and he goes he goes hey Louie. I hear you're in over readers anonymous and Louie kind of snapped like oh Isn't he got insulted? Yeah, oh cuz I'm big and then the guy's like no no no I'm also in it and then they hugged oh geez it turned around, but it was just like for this moment was like What are you doing? Don't you just noted me. I you know It's weird is everyone calls alcoholics anonymous aa, but no one ever calls over readers anonymous OA and the reason that I think it is is because of Tony Dancer. Oh Hey, oh wait, I just think it would be a bad connotation for people I definitely would have gone at this time with land of the lost Now is this the new land of loss? This is the new land of the lost now also I want to mention at this time Yo Yogi was on which was the baby vocation of the Yogi bear characters Yo, where they were wrap skateboarder Yo Yogi that was the other trend. Yeah, because Tom and Jerry kids was also on at some point this morning Well muppet babies really kicked that off. Yeah, but they but everybody everybody sassed it up muppet babies kept it pure You know it was very yoga, which was a pup named Scooby-Doo. That was that was the oh, yeah with red herring Yeah, that was a very good version of that show and a lot of the guys who worked on tiny tunes later worked on a pup named Scooby-Doo Paul Dini and yeah, it's a funny show. It's a great show. So when the loss. This was the new land of the lost With Timothy Bottoms in this episode. I don't know that is he played George Bush in the Trey Parker and Matt Stone That's my Bush series. He's an actor. He's in a lot of stuff. Yeah, the last is that that whole Cinematic craft stuff that's it's a completely out of my wheelhouse. I don't know anything about it very 70s very crazy Yeah, none of it has ever appealed to me They actually sued McDonald's for stealing their characters for the McDonald land characters and won Who would they have stolen the fragrance whole everything so the whole wrong McDonald grimace all the whole thing mayor Mccheese Yeah, it was all just a sitting money crop rip off and when they sued them that's in my rip off You mean they were also guys in costumes, but they were very similar and McDonald land was very very similar to HR puff and stuff Originally a right and they scaled it back by the time you're right. So 830. Would you go with? 830 we're Bobby's world nine o'clock sorry nine o'clock, right? Nine o'clock. I think I'm a dark-wing duck This was a very tough call at 9 a.m. For me at least because wood carving with Rick butts was also on carving with Rick butts was on Which was this no, I never watch what car was your how could you also backyard America was on the national network? Which I imagine is just cousins kissing and people wrestling I hope that you do another Saturday morning someday and somebody just pulls through and just watches all of those shows every single show here So what is the tough call dark-wing duck is great dark-wing duck was great. I did like dark-wing duck a lot It was my favorite of the new Disney show. It was not my favorite of the new Disney show I remember I I for some reason when I was like nine years old I got two huge pieces of poster board and made a life-size drawing of dark-wing duck I know why did this I was like I want a life-size drawing I had a friend that had he had collected They used to give a little figurines and the Kellogg's cereals Yeah, and so they dark-winged duck and I traded him. I don't baseball cards. I was like I don't want these can I have some little toys of dark-wing duck guys. That's a pretty good trade. That's a great trade That's that's probably worth more money than the baseball. There's long gone. Did you eat? Did you eat them by accident? Yeah, in the cereal I put them back in the cereal. I put them in my own box I was like look what I got it is a real shame that there is not toys in cereal anymore No, sometimes you get a spoon. I got a lightsaber pen recently. Yeah, what cereal was it? Maybe corn pops or something like that I mean my wife's delete cereal like fucking kids. Oh, I love I ate fruity pebbles this morning Yeah, I you I stocked up on monster cereal. I have so much fruit fruit and it's great I have I usually go life cereal today. I was fruity pebbles life is pretty good if you ever had um the Mexican drink Horchata. No, you would like it. It tastes like life cereal milk. That's It's like cinnamon. I'm gonna have to check that's like the milk left over from life cereal It's called horchata. It's very very popular in South America. Look that up. You live in Brockton There's gonna be a piece that does some sort of Hispanic you are an idiot There's a lot of Hispanics in Brockton. There's there's certainly our kids So there's probably some restaurants that do horchata. I will look for a horchata Yeah, just go on the streets and yell horchata and someone will come running Listen for the sound of the guys with the banalier guns at the air and I'll go towards them So I who's my tough call? That's a little song When I promote my line of horchata drinks I'm gonna open a store called the horchata And you get several different kinds of horchata The horchata, so I don't like that. It's called horchata horchata. Yeah, that sounds like kind of like a weird brothel Horchata. It's a horchata. Excuse me. You tell me where the local horchata is horchata Take all of us at the houses of him. I'm in my grandfather My uncle's only 12 years old with me Yeah And he had his girlfriend sleep over the house and my grandpa when he was a teenager And I was sleeping under my grandfather goes we can have girls sleeping over here. People are gonna think we're running a pump house My favorite term I had ever heard I don't think it's ever been used to get I've never heard pump house Because one teeniest girl comes out of the house people like I bet that's a pump house I don't think they call it a pump house. I never heard a pump house my grandfather also told my other uncle this quote a stiff prick has no conscience That was his other word of wisdom. All right. I need to know. I need to know my choice your choice is dark winged up Versus nope dark wind up didn't even fall into oh shit. It was either Garfield Goddamn it's Garfield was on CBS. It was the full hour This was in the height of Garfield and friends us acres Which was called Orson's farm in England We love a us acres because us acres didn't make sense in England Orson's farm or the Super Mario World car I would not have fixed would spun off from captain and the game master used to be mixed together super mario But the three I if it was if it was the one with Captain Lou albano I might have gone that direction, but I would not that was the super Mario super show Yeah, which was my favorite thing about that show was they added lyrics to the Mario Brothers song Yes, and it went swing your arms from side to side. Come on. It's time to go through the Mario Song by Captain little better Classic so let's get a cover that no be a big guy Garfield is a good choice Garfield was very good. Probably the best Saturday morning cartoon based on a comic strip Yeah, and you know what I don't think I like the Garfield side of it. I always I wanted us acres more us acres Yeah, I actually I have Twins for the people that don't know and this year for I call my daughter chicken I call her since she was born because she came out. She was small. She looked like a chicken Yeah, but I wanted to I was trying to figure out a way to build I Wanted to hurt she get dressed up as a chicken Halloween and I wanted her brother to be in an egg Yeah, and I wanted him to be Sheldon and whatever the fuck Sheldon's brother's name was I forget what his name was but I wanted and it would have been Super obscure. No one would have appreciated other than myself and my wife, but that's who it's for. That's why I have kids Yeah, so 930 would you go with now that you're not gonna like this and I ultimately don't like this I went with pro stars because it is so stupid pro stars was very stupid So this was cartoon with Wayne Gretzky Bo Jackson and Bo Jackson and they flew around and solved crime. Yeah using their sports powers This was done by the same company that made a wish kid the Macaulay Culkin But pro stars was awful. It's awful. It is Blatchably bad. I think it's what killed Bo Bo Jackson's career. Oh, it wasn't the debilitating hip injuries that he says that would happen to him Yeah, cuz the bone know everything Exactly how to keep his joints in check. I remember the only I'm not a sports fan. No, neither am I but Bo Jackson was just all prevalent at the time But here's how Bo Jackson used to come up if someone had BO people would go who bought who brought Bo Jackson That's people would say where I grew up and then I turned into Bo Diddly after Bo Jackson disappeared Yeah, I definitely would not have a process But I appreciate that you picked it. It is garbage. I would have gone with Beetlejuice any day Beetlejuice. Yeah, great cartoon. I thought about it. Beetlejuice the cartoon almost better than the movie In many ways it changes the character quite a bit. Oh, yeah, he's not a guy like a CZ in the movie. He's basically Just a real piece of God. He's just the one element of friend. Yeah, he's just a weird guy I also had a big crush on the on the Lydia character from the cartoon. Yeah, that's a good the animation in that show is good Had the computer voiced by Kree Summer who was Penny on Inspector Dodger In also one a different world Also, Superboy was on the live action show which featured the live action version of your crush from Captain Planet Fairy Tale Theater, which I was a huge fan of which Shelley Duvall. Yeah, great great show and something called scale modeling I don't exactly show what that is, but it's very small. I like to watch that right now So 10 a.m. What'd you go with? Well 10 a.m. There was a this is This is some Jim's here. I It I in third place. I'm gonna rank the third place is hammer time The hammerman. Oh is it it's not hammer time. It's hammerman. Well hammer time happened on hammerman This was a show about MC Hammer and his magic shoes, which talked he had talking magic dancing shoes Yeah, I watched it. Yeah, cuz I remember getting the TV guide when they would do the new Saturday morning preview and go Well, it's on the cover of this TV guide which we'll see when I post it We have dark wing duck wears walled out the cartoon which sucked. Yeah, hammerman and Doug Doug, which is great Hey, I'm a man. Hey, I'm a man. Hey, I'm a man Hammerman was after the kid and play cartoon. Maybe the worst cartoon. I don't remember the kid in play cartoon. Oh couldn't play a cartoon. Oh Yeah, hammerman Awful, yeah second place Would have been wish kid wish kid. I definitely gave every Saturday morning show a chance Yeah, which I watch everything - I had three TVs and I used to have all the networks on And I would kind of go in and out for the shows that I was checking. Oh, you're not murdered someone I don't know. I really don't know honestly wish kid is the Macaulay Culkin make a wish cartoon Yeah, he had one wish a day cuz here's what happened a falling star landed in his baseball glove now happen It which happens to all of us, but when it happened to him instead of being burned to death He managed to get magical powers where he got one wish a day. Yeah, that's reasonable makes perfect sense But what'd you go? I would I what I went with and I did not know about this show at the time. I haven't In the past there's a reason I picked this year and it's for this show Which is the cartoon adaptation the the baby if the baby if I Little shop of Horace cartoon little shop. Yes. Absolutely. I had no idea existed at the time I'd never had seen little shop of Horace the movie the musical. I love the musical. I love the movie And we've seen the original movie the with I Think my dad has it. I think I'd started trying to watch it and I was like I'm not watching pretty good Although the the musical movie is so much. I love it's one of my favorite musicals So when I I don't know how I stumbled upon the idea that there was a little shop of Horace cartoon Yeah, but boy, oh boy. It was good. It was a good. It was a fun show. It the animation looks it's stylized Yeah, it was not popular. No barely no last very long. It was not last very long I I was also a huge fan of the head of the class episode where they did little shop of Horace and Dennis played the plant I'd see I'd never seen one episode. They did a musical every year You'd actually really like that and they did a musical every year and it was two full episodes where the students did a musical And it was just really just them. Yep, the characters in the music. They little shop. They did hair. They did grease Was it was very interesting boy. That's a strange choice. It's a strange choice But little shop was a good show. I would have gone a little shop at this time for me It would have been between little shop and ninja turtles, but little shop was more Yeah, Ninja Turtles is one of those there were there's Saturday morning cartoons that are on every day Yes, like Ghostbusters was on every day two different versions Yeah, there was a Saturday morning version and a weekday afternoon version of Ninja Turtles people's use was that as well Yeah, and so I think I feel like new episodes premiered on Saturday mornings and eventually they made it to the afternoon so yeah I also want to point out at this time shown on Discovery Channel is a show called deaf mosaic Not D. E. F. D. E. A. F. Mosaic of deaf people or four deaf people. I'm not exactly sure So let's go on to 10 30 a.m. Yeah Man, this is where the the morning kind of fell apart and oh, I wouldn't say so but what well I went with Bill and Ted's adventures awesome show is it good it was so I remember it But not fondly I don't really I just know that they existed there would I have the series if you'd like to borrow I don't but there are two there were two Bill and Ted adaptations at this time there was a live action TV series which was terrible How okay, you know now where are we? Have we gone on our bogus journey yet? We have okay focus journey actually sat on the shelf for almost two years It came out this year that this TV guide is both journeys. Great. I think both movies are good They're both very good That animated show was actually endorsed by the guys who wrote the movie and everyone recreated their voices Oh really? So they had Alex winter and Alex winter they had Keanu Reeves. Wow. They had George Carlin in the live action TV series Rick Overton played the George Carlin. Oh, yeah, I do you think I remember that? Yeah, terrible and so Oh, even though I like Rick Overton. Yeah, but Alex winters went on a talk show circuit Tour telling people how awful the live action show was that's great How we hated it and how the animated show was so much better. Yeah, and it didn't it didn't have a hip But they had a cereal at this time by Ralston Which is anything worse than a Ralston cereal? No, Ralston was the most bait-and-switch cereal company Jesus Christ So Ralston's big money-making product was dog food for real. They made gravy train I guess I would get fooled every single fucking time. Yeah, their big deal was they would get a licensing agreement So they get bill and Ted. They had the Batman cereal the Ghostbusters cereal Ghostbusters Robin Hood Prince of thieves the cereal was terrible awful It was all every goddamn time I would get full and a lot of times They'd even package it with a fun thing like the Batman cereal came with a Batman bank Yeah, the bill and Ted cereal came with a bank that was a replica of the phone booth Which are which is worth it for the price of admission, but the cereal was terrible But Bill and Ted's adventures was a really good time with that was a good that was a good call The other good show that was on at this time was called the Pirates of Darkwater, which was sort of a mature cartoon Yes, I only yeah, see that was that did nothing for me because I was eight years old It was serialized which was extremely rare at the time. Yeah, I remember the toys Yeah, the toys were very cool as well. Yeah, it was a Hanna-Barbera show It was aimed at older kids. Yeah, I think it would do well now It's sort of I think the people who watch like Legend of Cora or like the last Airbender and that probably would like that's not really like the Pirates of Darkwater But you can't get the whole series on DVD and I recommend that you do. I'm not gonna do that You probably won't 11 a.m. I went to back to the future Not the best cartoon. No, it did have live-action intros by Christopher Lloyd Yeah, I think that's why I liked it now It was worth it for watching just the intro and then swinging what switch into a different show Yeah, the problem with that is that it was If it had been about mighty McFly, I feel like I would have enjoyed it Said it's about Doc Brown's stupid kids from the third movie, which I don't like no one likes them Two different Michael J. Fox movies were adapted into cartoon series. Do you know what the other one was? Teen Wolf. Yes, Teen Wolf. Yeah, pretty good show. That's probably the only guess you'd have because it wasn't a secret to my success It was Brett Light's big city. It wasn't Doc Hollywood. It wasn't Doc Hollywood, which is a movie I enjoy. Sure. Bridget Fonda You're not totally joining us But that's not a bad call although at this time. I would say by the bell see I don't care about say by the bell because again, I live my life I don't want to watch live action. I want cartoons god damn it It was sad when the live-action stuff started that day and I will say this this is original series Say by the Bell and I am a die-hard fan of the new class over the original series any day I'll take say by the Bell the new class. I Don't you didn't I just didn't care for it. I don't care for any of the people that came from it fair enough Fair enough, and you didn't watch a Nickelodeon out of control, which was one of my favorite Nickelodeon shows Dave Koolier Dave Koolier was sort of his original show. It was a weird talk show Nickelodeon it only had about 18 episodes This isn't this is but you already oh, so this is in they were still airing it this time very fun weird innovative show 1130 I went with GamePro. That's a good move. This was I can't remember what it is though So GamePro was a live action. It was a magazine show based on GamePro magazine I know that I knew there was based on the magazine. It was hosted by J.D. Roth who hosted Fun House Oh fun. Is there anything did you ever want to do anything more than go into the fucking Fun House though? I went in audition for it Jesus Christ They did a tour one summer where they went to malls and with the fun house with not the full fun house They were like smaller versions of the games J.D. Roth was there and I went to the meadow Glen mall in Medford, Mass Where they were at the time there was a store owned by the drummer from the band Xtreme And it was a musical instruction place called more than chords But I went there and I tried to run this maze and J.D. Roth called me Husky And I was like I hate you now and forever. Did you want a roundhouse kick his head off? I really didn't want to kick his head off. He's very small and yeah Yeah, I J.D. He's still around. Oh, he he produces a lot of the reality TV shows Yes, he produces the bachelor or something like that something big I was at the barber shop one day and they had the TV on and it was like kids survivor and he was the host I was like, it's not a bitch. There he is. Yeah, he just won't go away Fun House though, man I wanted to go in that goddamn thing so bad. They did an adult version of Fun House Called college madhouse and it was slightly racier. It was the same people It was just like a ball pit and then the bottom it was like a stripper. It was college kids Well, yeah, they would have like more double entendre games and it was always like girls jiggling The teams would be basically girls and tight shirts. What's the show? Fuck They would go around they were on like a circular stage and they were like prizes. Yes I'm telling is what it was called and at the end they ran through prizes. It was brothers and sisters. Yep Yeah, it was it was it was basically I was trying to think I thought it was something about malls or something No, there was one called treasure mall that was hosted by houseparks. No, it's not that it's I'm telling it's I'm telling So I'm telling was a children's version of the newlywed game essential The newlywed game except it was brothers and sisters Your answers and then at the end you ran through this sort of mall of toys that you got to shop for yeah Which was also very similar to the second season of video power where you had the velcro suit And you basically put you ran through the funhouse and velcroed video games to yourself His name was Johnny arcade and on the show his real name was Stevie, Peninsky Like dear Stevie, Peninsky go fuck yourself dickhead. Yeah, 1130. You want a game pearl That's not a bad choice. Your other choices were said by the Bell, which we already established You didn't want to watch and wears Waldo, which was a terrible cartoon However, the thing is is that I the thing about wears wall I was maybe mad is that for Christmas every year in my family they would do because there were so many cousins on one side Right they would do a grab and they would have the the you your uncle aunt they would pick one kid Yeah, so you don't have to buy press. Yeah, so if you have three kids you pick three different names Yeah, and everybody used to get all kinds of cool shit and I always got the fucking Where's Waldo book? No, I wanted the where's wall. Oh cuz everybody else is getting wears Waldo books and magic eyes Right and I'm getting like oil pastels So I'm getting art again art supplies. No good, and you're not a painter now. No, I'm not a goddamn painter Maybe you I'm also not you know, and maybe that could have changed my life I can't find anything maybe I could fight so I resented Waldo Yeah, Sean loses stuff all the time if he had a wears Waldo book He might have developed those skills the appropriate time. I don't even know what my kids are right now No, no, I have a poster with a bunch of pictures of kids I also want to point out that skate TV was on at this time, which was pretty innovative It was hosted by Matthew Lillard who I still hate But it was a show about punk rock and skateboarding on MTV in 1991 and it was awesome It was a lot of people from Thrasher magazine. It was a really weird hip show kind of underground On Nickelodeon in the in the mid late 80s early 90s. It was a good show We have one more hour left before Saturday morning is over. Yep. No, I'm up at baby I knew you'd go with momma babies and I knew you'd go with muppet boys Really really great But there was also a short-lived Saturday morning version of Friday night videos on at this time that NBC tried to do called Saturday videos Now let's Friday night videos So Friday night videos was on up until the late 90s and at one point it was actually hosted by Tom Kenny I thought it was a stand up show. No, they put stamps on it later very late late 90s But Friday night videos started in 1982 and when it was essentially NBC saying What we're gonna do is MTV for people without cable. So it was on at 11 30 and it ran to one o'clock It replaced sctv after sctv was canceled So it's just music videos just music videos hosted by people that like famous people of the week I have many episodes of it. It's uh, it's very exciting and then put a daytime bird and put a daytime version on So this was scheduled comics chip and pepper foster who I've never heard of chip and pepper foster Introduce videos by rem and emf So I probably would have watched that but muppet babies is a good good choice Yeah, and then at 12 30 what'd you go with? Uh, well, by 12 30 my day is over. I'm ready to go outside or do something else Yeah, the muppet babies is the capper. So you left the muppet babies. Yeah, I picked what about women What about women? Probably would have been a stand-up show. I don't know what yeah, I don't I honestly can say I don't I like the title women was what about women I would have gone with uh storybreak which was cbs is hosted by bob quiche and kept to kangaroo originally And then later hosted by macho Malcolm Jamal Warner. This was animated adaptations of children's books Yeah, I remember that I probably should have picked that dragon flight was a big one. Yeah chocolate fever. God damn it I kind of stuff. So I would have gone with that. Yeah, that's not that's not a bad pick. It was educational Yeah Well, Sean Sullivan that concludes saturday our very first saturday morning special edition Yeah, I encourage you to do more of these I think saturday morning's fun And I think I would I'll do is I'll make some DVDs for your children when they're of age So that they can watch saturday morning so you can make them write people Yes, that's exactly so I make them write the people in the shows. Yeah. Yeah, they'll write. No, they can write some jd ron No, right jd ron. No, right. It's gonna be long dead. Yep. Yeah. Hey, fuck you, stippin piddensky Yeah, no, it's it's not there's nothing on. No, no, but but at the same time I can watch whatever I want whenever I want Yeah, I'm a fucking adult. Yeah, don't tell me what to do We had so many donuts for breakfast because no one's telling us what to do. Fuck you parents Exactly. Well on that note, for my parents Thanks Ken Well, then you have it go out and play t-ball now go out to your chores saturday morning is over and Candlepin bowling's on if you live in new england in 1985.
