We're in this section, first Corinthians 12, 12 to 14. It's a major section within this letter of first Corinthians. 12 to 14 is so demarcated. It really is an entity unto its own, which is why you see some pastors and scholars that will write books just devoted to those three chapters. And we introduced this last week. This is where the conversation of spiritual gifts comes up. And here's what happens. You hear spiritual gifts, or you hear Pentecostalism or Charismatic movement, you hear all this stuff. It does initially originate in the text. It does actually start there. But what often happens is that these topics and sometimes these texts take on a life of their own. And like a helium balloon, they sort of drift away becoming untethered from the original origins. And so last week, I'm trying to get us back to the text to look at it and say, "Now wait a minute, what is going on actually here?" Well, in that first section, one to 11, Paul tells us that God has provided what he calls manifestations of the spirit, which we said are made up of some mix of natural God-given talent and spirit-energized endowment. That is, God has equipped his people with these grace gifts, which is Paul's preferred terminology, not spiritual gifts, grace gifts. He's equipped God's people with these grace gifts for the purpose of serving the good of the church, common good, good of the church, and shining a light on Christ, exalting Christ, creating conditions for Jesus' obsession within the church. Now, there's a very important practical principle I attempted to make clear last week. That is this. Too often, we think of the work of the spirit as something extraordinary. Too often, we think of a work of the spirit as something extraordinary, something you don't see every day, something that would go viral on YouTube.
