Okay, here we go, Matthew seven, Matthew seven. This is part of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. And we get to this part which in modern culture, percussive secular culture, those even least familiar with the Bible. They know this one, they know this one. Let me read it, Matthew seven. Jesus says, judge not, that you not be judged, that you be not judged, for with the judgment you pronounce, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye? But do not notice the log that is in your own eye, or how can you say to your brother, let me take the speck out of your eye when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, then you'll see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them under foot and turn to attack you. So there it is, as I was working through this passage this week, I came across a story that is illustrative, I think, of what we're looking at today. The story was of a concerned husband who went to see the family doctor. He said to the doctor, I think my wife is deaf.
She never hears me the first time I say something. In fact, I often have to repeat things over and over again. Well, the doctor said, here's what I want you to do. I want you to go home, stand about 15 feet from her and say something. If she doesn't reply, move five feet closer, and say it again, and keep doing this, so we can get an idea of the severity of her deafness. Okay, so the husband goes home, and he does exactly as the doctor said, he stands 15 feet from his wife, who's standing in the kitchen, she's chopping some vegetables, and he says, honey, what's for dinner?
