You have your Bibles, would you turn to Luke chapter one? Luke chapter one. We've been making our way through the Scriptures and every time we get to this season, we pause from that and move into the Christmas stories and we're gonna do that today and all the way through Christmas Eve. What does it mean to be blessed?
The word blessed gets thrown around quite a bit in Christian circles, doesn't it? Often it's just another word for rich, someone materially and financially secure. Other times, we use it to refer to the fact that things are going really well. Kind of a Christian version of being lucky. The odds have been in your favor. I once heard a well-known TV preacher describe being blessed as getting a really close parking space at the mall. That was the favor of God. Now look, part of me, I know I laugh too, but part of me can relate to things going well for you at the mall. Several years ago, I made the mistake of going to a very large mall on a Saturday in December. Those of you who laugh have experienced this. I spent an hour, an hour stuck in traffic in the outer loop of the mall's parking lot trying to get out. At one point, the words from Hotel California by the Eagles just kept running through my head. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave. So I can understand how one might think that things going well for you at the mall is a blessing. In the Midwest, we don't really use this phrase, but in the South, you'll hear the words bless his heart. Yes, but when someone from the South uses that phrase, bless his heart. Let me tell you something, there's no blessing in those words. What it really means is he's an idiot.
