Co-Hosts Scott Odom and Evan Semanco are joined today by Lead Pastor Justin Haigler to give the first podcast building project update since January 2024, and a lot has happened as we move closer to our new home at the Louisiana Boardwalk. We catchup with Justin on stories of generosity and people who have worked their tails off to make the progress that has already happened, and Justin explains what is going to happen and even teases a move in date that hasn't been said anywhere else.

If you are inspired to join in we'd love for you to fill out the Skill Survey below, give to the project, or you can reach out directly via e-mail to Justin@thesimplechurch.tv. Thank you again to everyone who has given so far, and we can't wait to move in this year!

the original comes back that's right. That's right. There's some debate over how to do it or who to do it. There's been some impostors and absolutely everyone to have a whale off. Yeah, well off. It could be like the birthday party thing. We can set it up outside. There you go. Come by and try. Yeah. Well, like Chuck did pretty good because he hit Striper. Now that was a little assisted. They have to make Chuck hit it. But we had to go and post production with Jordan and DK. Oh, he hit it though. Yeah, that's what I mean. It was just you got to you got to hit post to kind of why he definitely hit it. I'm saying that post production. He said I got it one time in me and we're like, here we go. And we hit record and he nailed it. Well, go back. Go back and watch. That was a Striper. What was that message on? What? What's one was that? Father's father's father's day. Yeah, I had to go back man day. Yeah, go back. We'll put a link in the show notes and you're listening to the voice of Justin Hagler lead pastor back to the podcast with Scott Odom here in Jordan. First time in a while. We're glad to have you busy man. We got we got a lot to cover. That's right. So I went and looked it up. And the last time you were on talking about our new building in the new space was January. It's been six months since you came with Christie talked about it. And so today we're going to do two parts with you. We're going to talk about what's happened so far the last six months and then what's to come and some more exciting updates about the future. So here's the deal. What we better do is I better give a disclaimer because anything I say is more than likely 90% accurate right at the gate might be 95% might be a percentage. Scott's only like 70%. But the reason I say that because John who will listen to this is he'll go, well, that's pretty closer because we got to cover a lot of ground because you're talking about finances. You're talking about completion, construction. I didn't know things have changed. Yeah, there's so many things to update. And we just had a event that kind of was the marker that we were shooting for which was Eddie and Elizabeth's wedding there. Congrats to Eddie. And that was just what a couple of weeks ago. And that's what we were trying to get the downstairs ready for because it was a favor to Eddie and Elizabeth. They wanted to try to happen. And it was happening anyway. It was happening first. Yeah, they just wanted to, I don't remember exactly how it happened. But he's like, man, I really would like to be able to get married in there. And I'm like, sure, we can figure all that out. Then he was like, how about June, whatever 28th or whatever. And we were like, I mean, we about to die. Well, let's back up the bus. So let's go back our starting. This has been two years ago. Now that the project we announced moving into the morning. This is going on. It was March 2022. Right. That's why I said if you get me, it's all a blur to me, because I'm covered in paint and has inhaled a lot of paint fumes. So may or may not be true. That's right. So we announced we were going to try to raise the money. We were going to go for it. We had this opportunity. And then we're able to start. That's all that happened in 2023 into 2024. Beginning of the year, we were talking about the children's space. And that's coming along a lot of progress there. And so for the last six months, basically, the building's been under construction, you're managing the project, you've done it before with your brother, John, who talked about, and it's a lot. Yeah, well, the cool thing is to brag on the people we number one, we raised a lot of money. So I know that I think it was two and a half million dollars is what we raised up front, which is miraculous. I mean, there are miracles in similar church history, but that's a big one because no one thought we would have that much money. That was critical and crucial to the project, because it's really like a $5 million project. So in the process of trying to figure out all of this, we started on the children's building, and we put the majority of that money, working with brown builders to accomplish the build. And it is just about finished, as far as the build is concerned on the children's. And we were able to let Brown kind of manage that side of everything. I mean, fours are in banks done. I mean, there are people not seen and gone in there and have a chance. So it's a lot since the original and we didn't have to do anything over there. So the reason that went smoother and easier and probably a little bit faster, it was the most work that needed to be completed, because it was a total gut and a total rebuild. That was the old destiny day spa and do good store and all so many other things. But that has been almost completed and Brown builders pretty much did everything in there, which is a huge blessing and a huge thankful to them, and all that they've helped us to accomplish because they have all the subs and they get all things done. But on the adult side, which is the downstairs event center where Eddie's wedding was, I mean, which is going to be an overflow for Sunday morning, but we're looking at ways to use the space. I'll be talking about that coming up on June, July 28 or 29, whatever it is, because I'll talk about the building. Yeah, 28. Just because we're trying to explain to people, you have these resources that we've never had before, we've always rented place to place to place. Now you have facilities that are yours or leasing them long term, but you have a home and you have outdoor space, you have indoor space, you have large space, small space, children's space, all of those are going to be awesome blessings. But we have to finish process. Yeah, you got to, you got to build over, you know, construct on pain, put floors in. And there's so many people that have work to make that happen. Like I said, Brown did all the children's building. Christy was great. And you know, we were drawing things out and figuring out what we want. And she has her team of people. And they're pretty much done. So when we get to, in a little bit, we'll talk about we're going to give you a walkthrough chance coming up. But the adult side is where we're still working. So downstairs is pretty much completed. We have now the upstairs, which is where the main, where we're going to meet to see the live land and the church where the church is going to meet. And there's a little studio in there as well that can be extra stuff. All of that's got to get started. And that starts like this week, like, legitimately, like now, because we finished downstairs, we still have a little bit more to do. No, a lot more to do upstairs to get our deadline of September the 15th. That's what we're shooting for. It's coming. Everybody goes like, you're crazy. Well, not really. I mean, we're, we don't know for sure. But we're shooting for September to be one weekend, being there one way or another, whether it's 100% complete or 95 or 90%. We're going, we're going to give you 17th birthday. Yep, we're trying to get in 18. I think it's 18 birthday. 2007 to 2024 is our 20. Yeah, 2017, right? Is it 17? I think it's I went to Southwood. There we go. We'll figure it out. Somebody did the math course. I've always said 17, but maybe it is 18. I mean, maybe it is. I always said 18. Maybe it is 17. 17, 17. Yeah. That's John's favorite numbers is number that he's been waiting for. That's his favorite number. So going back, though, getting to where we are now, let's tell and brag some stories on some people have made a happen behind the scenes longer form. So the granite story, for example, is a great one. So yeah, so like downstairs, when you say you have to do it yourself, and you're not letting a contractor manage that, that means that you're trying to save the money and you need favors. And you got to do a lot of yourself. It's kind of like a home remodel that you are taking ownership to with. You can hire out some things, maybe that are too big for you. But a lot of it is do it yourself. And so as we're working through that, one of our big expenses was painting. So me Angie and a lot of other Sammy San Angelo came in at the end there, him and his team. We kind of decided to take that because it was a big rock and a lot of money that they had priced. So hundreds of thousands. Yes. Like, and truthfully, it's crazy. But I think it was somewhere around 100 gallons of paint just in downstairs. And most people can't believe that, but you had primer. Everything was wood. So they had to prime the wood. And that took two coats. Some of that, then you had to paint everything. And it was multiple colors. I mean, you had all of that work to just get done. And when you walk through that, you know, shortly, you'll be able to go, okay, I can kind of see it. We'll do it before and after. But in that process, we had floors that need to be done. Jim Metzger was huge. And we were in there. Jim was looking at, he donated a lot of his work, like his actual money that he would have made. He donated prices on all of the materials. He's just been really, really helpful. He's my life group, but a great guy. He's like, man, I think we can do this and this, that and the other. Well, as we were looking through all the floor stuff, as far as carpet and vinyl and all that, he, I said, man, we got to get these countertops done. And he's like, man, call Don, you know, so we called Don Studio Granite. He comes down. He attends Simple Church, you know, and and save a while. And he said, he admitted from since the pandemic, spent a little bit hard to come in. He's one of the owners of Studio Granite. He comes in, he says, man, what are y'all doing? Like this what we're doing? He's just like, man, you're doing the paint and stuff. Just like, yeah, bro, like we got to save every dollar. Because every dollar we save doing something ourselves puts it back towards media, like equipment, or it puts it back towards another project. It can't make your own soundboard. Yeah, right. Yeah, you got to, yeah, you got to have some, you got to buy it. You got to buy the speakers. So it's all about trying to do as much as you can yourself to save as much money and look for many favors as you can. And it started happening. So Don is just one example. He said, dude, I'm gonna donate all the granite for the downstairs bathroom or whatever, which was huge. I mean, you're talking thousands and thousands of dollars. And his people came in, did it all. And, you know, no time at all and was just super, super kind to us. And we were just reflecting on it before we went on the podcast, just like, that's what it takes. Like, you know, he owns a company. He's an expert at it. So it's not like me and you messing something up. Scott was going, you don't want me painting. You do not. Then everybody has their things that you are good at or whatever. But you're just trying to figure out how to get it accomplished. Because once we can get it accomplished, and all of these people putting in whether so if you've given in the past, I'm trying to manage, we are trying to manage every dollar given to get as much out of as possible because it's God's money. It really is your money. It's what we're doing for the church. So you take that seriously. And so that means long nights. I mean, we didn't get done till one, sometimes two in the morning. And people are like, and you still preached. And you still did, you know, whatever else, all you had to do. Yes, just like if you're remodeling your house or you're on another project, it's the necessary sacrifices. And the ask other people don't sacrifice from his business. He could have made money on that. But he's gonna, Hey, I'm going to help with that gym could have made more money. He sacrificed. I go through a long list. There's so many people that have done that. Brian Collier is another one. Like the only he did a lot of the the epoxy flooring and stuff. And they were in there for hours grinding all that down. He could have charged way more than he charged us. But it's all about trying to get everything accomplished and finished in a short amount of time, because we are trying to get in before the end of this year. And we really want to get in this fall. Because if we can get in by September, it saves us a little bit more money. Everybody's like, well, what's the rush? Why can't we just take our time and do whatever? Well, every time you're slowing something down, it costs money. Because you have to continue to rent other spaces, you have to continue to put your money in other places to pay for air conditioning for a place that you're only renting where we're playing for three air conditioners. Now our office, which we're not moving into yet because there's an office space that we might be able to, you know, eventually move in down there, you have your downstairs that you're paying for. Because now we have brand new air conditioners. That's just another company, Glenn Miller and those guys that premiere took care of us, donated stuff all the time. I mean, like, Hey, man, let me help you here. Let me help you there. All of that stuff is moving parts that you're trying to get done so that we can enjoy it as a church and then have it as a resource. And I'll talk about this coming up soon. A tool, it's just a tool. The building is literally a tool that God can use. And we got to get that tool finished so that it can be available to help the community help us help the boardwalk. There's so many great things happening, but it takes a lot of people to pull it off. And those are just some of the people I'm throwing in tons of other people. Talk about the fountain too. I think that's a really yeah, Jason Montgomery huge, man. Jason is pro concrete, great friend, and didn't really know him before this, but Brad's gone. Great friend. You know, said, man, we're working to get some stuff done as far as because there was a lot of uneven pavement, tripping hazards all the way around the building, all the way out in that open fountain area. The fountain was not working anymore. And Ashley and them were trying to figure out to do and there's a thing going around that I got repoted on Facebook. Yeah, right. Yeah. No, it's like, man, the truth is, it's like everything when you're managing a property and you're trying to figure that out, the new owners are out of Austin and texture can of great guys and super helpful to us. And they're trying to figure out the entertainment side and changing from just retail. And there's a lot going on. And everybody super, you know, you know, they can be critical or super nice, depending on going, Hey, I'm trying to, you got to remember, we, this is our city. This is, these are our people. This is our community. So we like to be problem solvers, instead of creating problems. And in that regard, we saw that it was a problem. They weren't sure they're going to be to fix it and it was going to be expensive. So I thought, man, we can pull it out, maybe eventually raise money and have a playground or at least a common area that people can use. And we didn't know how we were going to do it. And Jason Montgomery shows up, he's doing concrete, a whole other side of the job, which did amazing. And he's like, man, I'm going to do that for you, you know, for nothing, you know, the cost of fuel and the cost of the dirt to fill it, which we had huge bids on getting that. But you know, fill it in, we were like, I can't believe he's going to do this. Well, all of those things, it still cost us a little bit and it costs Jason a lot, but it's all to try to make that area better. So instead of just complaining, are going, I just can't believe this, I never been this way. It's like, no, what can we do as a church and as a group of people and as businesses in this community to rally to support each other and bow, that a Bojax hurricane. Now they've talked about this a lot. You really got to come together and work together in so many different areas to make all of it better. It is not one group on their own. And for the church to be a part of that, a part of the solution, not, you know, picketing, not being mad, not saying why this is wrong or this is right. Yeah, it's like, yeah, it's like, hey, do we're for this community? We're far everything getting better. And we're going to work really, really hard to make that happen, whether that's literally by painting it ourselves, or literally by recruiting or, you know, getting investors to invest back in the community. All of those things are happening. And those are happening for me in a lot of different ways. I've had a lot of private meetings with a lot of different investors to try to get a lot of things going, not because I'm making a dime off of it. This is where my crazy is like, well, why is he doing all this? He must be making some kind of money or their benefit in the church. No, it's because it's our community. We're not going anywhere. This is our roots. We love Bozier City. We love the Shreveport Bozier area. We're here. We want to make it all better. And to do that, you have to sacrifice financially, energy, time, effort. None of that just happens. And everybody wants things to be better. But you have to put in that effort. And that's why I love someone church. Y'all get that. I mean, you really do, whether that's volunteering to help the hub, because you can complain about homelessness, or you can put some hands and feed and some resources to try to improve. And thank you to everybody who donated. We blew it out of the water in June, collecting the stuff. I think almost doubled what Robin expected to get. Yeah. And this is the that's the thing. And now when you come back to like a homeless problem, or water wells of people thirsty in another country or kids that are hungry, we do all that in the same way, the building is another tool, because you have a resource that people can use. And you have a resource that we can use for a lot of different things to reach people to have people come into our building into. It's just a little bit different than like, we're building a church. And we're just going to say it's our church. It's like, man, it's kind of shortsighted. And trying to be the biggest, coolest. Yeah, no, man, it's the truth is we're winning morning. I mean, we're telling you upfront that we're long time leasing it because that was the best deal for us because it freed up money to continue to do good. And everything we do on our own, and everything we save or someone donates. And that's from it from Jason Montgomery to Jim Metzger to Scott taken out to Scott taking out Trebron's helped us cutting their prices. Chris Elverson, they've helped us with on the architect stuff. Everything that was cut, you know, and saved a little bit, it all goes back to helping us have a bigger impact locally and globally in the name of Jesus. And I'm not exaggerating. Sometimes that's just a life group. My brother, for example, Joel, nobody's customs. I mean, they are a, you know, car place, but he reupholstered every chair in downstairs. You can't, it's the Boardwalk gave us those chairs, but they were old. They needed to be updated. He gave 100% of that all the effort, all the energy, all the materials. That's his expertise. He was able to go into doing that. My brother had some, you know, we all neck down guys, we got in there and they were able to unscrew him and screw him back on there. But it doesn't, you couldn't see that. But that took hours and hours and a lot of money. And he's just Joel's doing all the goodness of his heart because he's like, man, that's the one thing I know that I can do. There's a lot of that going on. And there's a lot more to go. So like, if you're listening, you go, well, I got this or I have that. Like we still don't know we're going to do upstairs countertops. We're like, Hey, man, if you want a granite company, call us, man. We'd love to redo them all and say the contact info on the show. Well, because yeah, the truth is, is whatever it is, helps in the pot. I'll give you Ed Adams is another one. Ed, I hadn't been to similar church in a little while. I know Ed, and donated all of the ceiling tile. Really? I didn't even know Yeah, called Ed. I was like, Hey, Ed, man, I mean, this is, I don't know if you can help us. He's like, man, I love you all love what you do. I got your back. Now we put it in ourself. We spent painted the grid ourselves. So like Garcia, you know, all of these different people are up there, you know, painting everything. I mean, they're trying to make all of that happen because it's a combination of of those sacrifices and those efforts. And as we're moving forward, the reason I say it is when you walk in there, will you have any sweat equity? Like what I asked a lot of people is like, we just go walk in and be a taker, are you going to walk in and go, man, I gave here, I remember when we did this, I remember when that happened. And my hope, my prayer is is that every one of us will remember something you did. You'll go, dude, I'll never forget when we just you only get one chance at it. Right. So it's right in the check is critical. And so a lot of you, I am super grateful because you remember you sacrificed to make it happen. And we still need more sacrifices. We're we're not where we need to be. We still because of the cost of things and, you know, some change orders, unforeseen things that happen in there, we didn't know once we got in, we need a little bit more money. So as we're going through that, that's still a viable thing. But at the same time, I had one guy all he did would come up and blow everything off. He used his blower from weed eating and grass and he's like, dude, I can come up and blow all this off. That is really what's gonna have to happen moving forward. When you take on a facility, this is why we were always excited about a facility, but also nervous, because we came from what it takes to manage a facility. And if you're not careful, all of these decisions, whether you're buying this or renovating that, as the old saying, the tail begins to wag the dog, as opposed to the dog wagging the tail. And if you're not careful, and you go, well, let's just hire somebody to clean. Well, let's just hire somebody to do this. You can't afford to do it. I'll give you one example. Rinke came in, they're unbelievable at cleaning. Right before the wedding, I looked at a section of floor and I was like, there ain't no way we can get this done. Like we don't have the expertise, we don't have the equipment. And so we call Rinke, they're good friends ago. So she came in and knocked it out in a quarter of the time for free. Well, I go back and go, you may have a gift set, a skill, an ability. And that's why we did a couple weeks ago, the whole QR code on Father's Day. He's like, Hey, man, tell us what you can do. And it's better when they're professional at it because you're good at it. You know, we'll put the QR code back in there and say if you have something or somebody wants to donate, you know, something they can do, I can go through Nelson's glass. I mean, got Morgan man, one of the firemen friends he put in the glass. I can go through time after time. He's like, dude, I got that. He put in a big mirror for us. We needed a big mirror and he's like, man, I can do that. I got that nailed down. I can go through over and over again, different people that go, this is what I can do. And it didn't take them no time. And it did cost them a little bit of money. It cost them a little bit of time. But then they can look in there and go, man, I was a part of completing this. And then it freed up money to do all the other stuff that that we needed to do that continues to, you know, need to be done. And we got a lot to go. So, you know, get involved, come on, help us, you know, get involved, blow the driveway off to as we moving forward, we won't hire a cleaning crew right off the bat. We're gonna believe that's volunteers like DD and them DD and them are all doing it right now. There's a whole group of volunteers that go up there and clean kids space. It's that's what it's got to be there. There still has to be that because we don't want to take the resources we have and blow them on managing a facility when we would rather people use their gifts and then take those resources that we have and continue to solve problems and further the gospel, share the gospel, make things happen on a bigger scale, whether that's locally or globally. And we don't want a building to take all that away from us, whether that's equipment or it's they're just tools. It doesn't matter if it's a soundboard or if it's a four walls, you know, a chair and a stage, an outdoor area, they're just tools to be used by God and we get to be a part of that. So, we want you to help us clean up the tools, get them ready to be used and then we'll figure out the best way to do that as we continue to move forward because the hotel's expanding next to us. There's a couple of exciting things they're working on at the boardwalk. There's people coming, you know, and we're going to be right in the center of downtown. Bose, really? I mean, right there on the river. It's a it's a beautiful place. There's a lot of potential, but we want to support the restaurants. We want to support the boardwalk and be positive, you know, look for the positive and be a part of the change and look back and knowing that you made a big difference in them. That's a lot of talking, but hopefully that should be a good question. I will say that the guys working on the hotel reminded me of where it is today. Yeah, that's they got that music going. They got the music going. Been great to 80 more rooms right there. Yeah, very nice. And Robin then we're just great guys. Rob's already said like anything like when fricking in country came in town, when we had the people for the wedding, they're hooking us up. Rob's like, man, what can I do to give you a great deal and partner with you because they're glad we're there and we're glad they're there. So you're trying to partner with all those local businesses, DJ down there at the piano bar is a great example. We did child dedication down there. DJ has been super super super kind, a regal run at the theater. I mean, how many times we rented the theater for, you know, the movie night, we've all of these different things. It just is a great thing when you're a positive agent of change as opposed to negative, you know, I'm saying, or you're looking at the negative, we got a lot of things to be very grateful for. And a lot of you have made that possible through giving through sacrifice. And we got a lot more to go, a lot more to go. Absolutely. Yeah, we had a kind of a surreal moment after Eddie Face wedding, walking out of there, Mallory turned to me, she's like, you know, this is probably where Nora will get married. Yeah. And as you talk about being sweat equity and being a part of it is, this next generation, my age and younger kids and families, you're about to be an empty nester. They all Scott's having a baby. Jordan's got some babies. Yeah. I'm excited about it. You better be excited about it. It's a lot to get there. Speaking of sacrifice, there'll be more to come. I promise you doesn't start already. But it is for our kids. It's going to be the space that is for our family to grow up in and be able to be a part of it. And it's really nice. Like I'm telling you, when you walk through, when you walk through, you're going to go, man, we've never had anything this nice ever, 17 years. This is the nicest thing we've ever had. And at the same time, it's kind of like, um, like the dad when you move into a house, it's like, how are you going to treat the house? Obviously you want to treat it with respect as far as, you know, taking care of it, so forth and so on. But at the same time, uh, we got to use it. I mean, that's why it's there. You don't, you don't build a house to let everybody just walk by and gaze at it. I mean, look at Europe. There's a lot of empty beautiful churches over there. You've got to be part of the community and you have to let it be used in however you can use every asset that we have because the church cannot be just a place that they come. It has to be that they're recognizing that we're inviting them, but then also encouraging and going out and recruiting. So man, this is our space. Use it. How can we help you? And if we have something we can help you, here's a great resource that we can do, uh, that's available to you. Uh, then also in the community goes, man, it's not like, well, it's got to be their way and it's got to be this. It's like, no, man, look, we're all in this together. And that's why the boardwalk's so good too, because it's a lot of those things saved you money. You don't have to build the parking. Well, that's all the city owns all the parking garage. So that's why, like even me working part time for the city. It's like, well, why would you do it? It's like the city does a lot for us. What's the least that we could do to help other people? Uh, and just on a, on a serious note, uh, yesterday was the, the hurricane coming through and then the tornado is breaking out. Uh, this is when it matters is, you know, we have families that, uh, right on my same street, I mean, they live on my street that tragically lost their lives. Well, the first responders, police, fire, the sheriffs were there, the benton fire department, the state police, uh, I was out there. We're putting tarps on roofs. You're trying to meet the needs of those families. And that's not because you get a paycheck. That is because you're a part of the community. There was nobody out there getting paid enough to do what they were doing. Whether that was a fireman extracting a family member, we have two small children that lost their mom. I mean, there's no amount of money that goes that math. That just makes this worth it. You do it because we're here to solve problems. We're here to be light in the darkness. And as a church and as a Christian, whether that's in a building or that's in the community, that's what we're supposed to do. In the same way, the city and the community recognizes that you should be known for solving problems, not creating them. You should be known for being, um, an agent of change in a positive way where people go like, man, thank God they showed up. And to Braggon, that bright Brian was out there with firemen this morning and Robin took gift cards to the family and we shared a GoFundMe. She sent me the link and there are already a couple of people that said they donated and less than 24 hours. And that's what the church should be. Yeah. And that's the reason I say that we had that talk this morning. Um, and it's way beyond the building. The church is the people. So they don't ever get hung up and saying this is the church because that building is just a building. It is us. And that's why Autry Lowry was, uh, instrumental divinalizable. He was out there. You have these guys that are giving their lives to that. And Autry's the one that started that. So we can't take credit for that. I can't take Robin Cant. Autry was there. He went right back. He was a fireman on scene. He goes to similar churches in my life group. He comes back and follows up today. We talked this morning and then I go to Robin and Robin's like, yeah, let's do A, B and C. Well, that starts because a non-staff member that is not sitting in our office goes, we're going to do this. And that's where I'm proud of Autry. Why? Because he is living that out and then we can begin to go, Hey, here's our role. Here's what we can do. And then the rest of the church can go, I can give a little bit of money or I can drop by or I can do whatever we can to help. And that's the goal. And I promise you, it won't matter if you have a builder or not when that happens. It makes no difference. What made what matters in the end is that the church understands the role in the community. And that is not to be worried about what happens just on the inside of the walls, but that you have a gathering place and a tool to be used that can go out and impact the rest of the world, the rest of the community. And that's what simple church has been known for. That's what we want to keep being known for. That's what we're going to do. We're going to cap the part right here because we're going to come back next week and tell you more about ways you can do that and see the building with your own two eyes and walk through it because July 28th, mark down your counters.
