I'm Tom and Luke pastor here because we are so glad you are with us and today we're probably concluding our series exiles the the idea behind the series is taking seriously what the Bible says when it says that we are strangers and Exiles in this world That we are not this is not where our citizenship is at best. We have dual citizenship here instead our citizenship is in heaven It's in the next life And what that means for us is that we are beholden to a different code a different way of doing things one that the world sometimes clashes with sometimes very like really badly and In other times like the culture is pretty friendly to us and that's a great thing But there is always going to be a tension between the world we live in and the world we're headed to and last week we Talked about two stories That I want to I want to finish I only gave you half of the stories last week The Paul Harvey for those of you who are really old, you know, Paul Harvey It's that's the rest of the story. This is the rest of the story last week We talked about how Martin Luther had the boldness to speak out There were things that needed to be said about God about the universe. He said them And we were challenged. Maybe God's calling you to be that maybe there's something that you are called to say in a public way Maybe you are the one who has been called to say something that people don't want to hear necessarily But it needs to be said well, maybe you're not What happens if you're not Well Martin Luther would not have been able to say the things he said if it were not for one other person Specifically we mentioned him a little bit last week, but I want to show you a picture of him His name is Frederick Frederick the third Frederick the Wise Duke of Saxony And as I told you at the end of Martin Luther's story last week when the Catholic Church Authorized his arrest and execution He was being he was on on his way to try and find safety. He was kidnapped extensively, but it turned out the kidnappers were the men of Frederick the Great Frederick the Wise and Frederick the Wise's men Frederick the Third Frederick the Wise They they took Martin Luther and they took them took him to his to Frederick the Wise's castle and there they sheltered him for 10 months And you might ask yourself Why was it that Frederick the Wise did this was it because perhaps? He really believed everything that Martin Luther was saying Well, it turns out probably not as far as we know Frederick the Wise to the day that he died remained a faithful Catholic and He knew very well that everything the Martin Luther was saying had the potential to blow up The reigning the reigning sort of status quo to the Catholic Church had instituted at that time
Maybe you're thinking that Frederick the Wise well He was a politician because he was he was a duke Maybe maybe he calculated that backing Martin Luther would help his political ambitions help the people of modern day Germany Saxony at the time no as a matter of fact in 15 19 two years after Martin Luther published the 95 theses before Frederick the Wise supported him He was he was the the number one guy to become the the Holy Roman Emperor Pope Leo the 10th at the times back to this guy Frederick the Wise to become the leader of the world Why Why would this guy stick his neck out you don't understand over the From 15 21 when he started sheltering Luther all the way until his death in 25 the Catholic Church Pope Leo the very guy who was gonna make him Emperor was pressuring him constantly Give me that man give me that man. Give me his supporters. Give me his followers stop supporting him and and never once Frederick the Wise said before he died never once was I tempted to do so
