In 1873, a group of 13 people near in the San Francisco area, and a rural part of San Francisco, got together and started a church. And a year later, in 1874, a couple joins that church, and the couple that joined that church had a little boy who was five years old. And their story was this. Their story was that they had gotten married relatively young, and for 18 years, they had desired a child. And for 18 years, that was not given to them. So for 18 years, they did all sorts of things. They went to various churches. They explored all kinds of spiritual mysticism. If you know about the 19th century and 19th century seances were a big deal, where people would gather and try to speak to the spirits. They did that. They tried everything they could to figure out how to get what they wanted and needed. And finally, they just hit their knees, and they just began praying. God, we don't know who you are really. Apparently, we don't know what's happening. But we just-- we desire a child. And after 18 years of marriage, when the father was 44, the mother was 39, they gave birth to a son. And in inexpressible gratitude for this miracle that it happened, they committed. They said, God, we're going to go, and we're going to try and serve at a church, because that seems like what you would want. So they found this little congregation of 13 people, and they served in that church for 10 years. This couple was very wealthy. The family had a lot of money, so they thought they had a lot to offer. This church, this church, was on a sort of a square acre in a rural part of the San Francisco area. There was a house that they kind of met in. Apparently, it was like a farmhouse to begin with. And so this couple, they said, God, you gave to us. Now we can bless this little humble congregation with all that you've provided for us. And so they did that for 10 years. And as I said, they were wealthy. They took an ocean liner, a cruise ship, to Europe with their now 15-year-old son. And when they were in Italy, their 15-year-old son, the miracle boy, caught typhoid fever and died. Welcome back to The Lifeboat. What we're going to talk about today is that The Lifeboat is better. If you weren't here with us, here's how we started last week. This is from Colossians 1. And Paul is telling us what's happened to us, where we are, why we're here. He said, God rescued us from the control of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the son he loves. He set us free through the sun and forgave our sins. I mentioned the cruise ship and the lifeboat. We've been likening the world that we've lived in as these two things. We start out, we think on a cruise ship. Cruise ship is where life is sort of set out for us, provided we understand the rules we
