Welcome welcome I'm Tom and lead pastor here at coast and we are super glad you are with us We are near the end of our summer series be the read For the last couple of weeks we've been finding out that God's ways are not our ways that his thoughts are higher than our thoughts And seeing what that means Because a lot of us we we make plans and we're trying to figure out how to make sure that plans are the kind of plans that God wants Rather than just the plans that that we want And so if that's something that you're interested in check out the last two weeks, especially last week And on coastbobble.org and you can get access to our youtube channel and also audio there Today we're going to continue with this text from Isaiah 55. It's a promise First to israel that god made about i don't know 50 is to 2,500 years ago ish right around there And it's the promise that there's going to come a day when everything is made right What's weird about the promise is that it is in this promise. We don't do anything because it's bizarre If god does everything which it doesn't see i mean if we think about life or like that's that's not how how Things work and we're going to see today that that applies Also to the way that we speak and so be the read is a way in which the bible pictures us Living life so that god's operating and we are sort of along for the ride So if you'd like to join them in izea 55 I've I've recently made a commitment to the common english bible translation For those of you who know when I started out Preaching here. I I would just do my own translations from the greek and the hebrew People were like who are you to do that? And that's a good point. Who am I? And so then I was bouncing around for years based on what I thought was kind of the best and I I've just recently decided that I'm going to stick with the seab and when things go totally like i'm like, no, I will make a little adjustments But i'll make sure to tell you So if you're looking for the translation that I will be using the common english bible Is it so this is izea 55 10 and 11 from the seab just as the rain and the snow come down from the sky And don't return there without watering the earth making it conceive and yield plants And providing seed to the sower and food to the eater So is my word that comes out of my mouth It does not return to me empty instead. It does what I want it accomplishes what I intend Now that that that image of god's word coming out and doing stuff is is a is a powerful image In fact, we it kind of harkens back to the beginning of the bible, right? Where god speaks and the world comes into being So there's something about god when god's speech that it's it's it's different in some ways than our speech god's speech is active And so let's kind of focus on the let's start by focusing on how god The the metaphor that god's using to talk about speech and that metaphor is is rain and snow Right, so just as rain and snow come down They rain and snow do stuff right when rain comes down what do we find out? We find out that it conceives and yields plants that conceive right there is a it's birth language in Hebrew Sometimes it gets uh smoothed out but the seabed good job seabed really brings us out. It's there's a there's a Sex and fertilization and then growth okay like that's that's the language that's being used here It conceives yields plants. It provides seed to the sower and food to the eater Well, that's that's that's an interesting way to think about language because it's not the way That we think about language right if you were like me when you were growing up You heard this rhyme which I found out comes from the 1800s in england and the right uh the rhyme is Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me Right and you've heard that and and the point of that is that the only thing that actually does stuff out there Is physical stuff right words don't actually do anything Which is weird because when you hear that the reason someone tells you that that nursery rhyme or that rhyme
