great to see everybody here I'm Tom lead pastor at coast and we are wrapping up our love and respect series it's a marriage series today we started out by talking about how we become one flesh and that was the first week and then Patrick shared about how it's our personal transformation that makes us the people who can love our our our our partner spouse well and then today then last week we talked about the love that she needs so we would talk a little bit about the way that that we guys can treat our our wives and fiances and girlfriends so that they get that sense that feeling of being loved and now this week we're gonna end by talking about respect and that's the gift that the women can offer to their their husbands and so let's start out we're gonna start out back in the song of songs the love poem and we want to hear about we want to hear about how the the man thinks about his his he calls her sister his bride so let's take a look at that my dove in the clefs of the rock in the hiding places on the mountainside show me your face let me hear your voice for your voice is sweet and your face is lovely again this is ancient Hebrew poetry so it's a little weird we don't necessarily think of you know a wife is like a dove in the rock or in a hiding place on the mountain but isn't that cool I mean ladies wouldn't you love it wouldn't you love it if your man said things like I want to hear you talk more I love the sound of your voice like that be cool right so good skip to chapter five and this is also what he says to her you have stolen my heart my sister my bride you've stolen my heart with one glance of your eyes with one jewel of your necklace how delightful is your love my sister my bride how much more pleasing is your love than wine and the fragrance of your perfume more than any spice and again we talked last week you know ancient people smelled very bad and so they they needed a lot of perfumes like you know and so it's a good thing right like we might be like okay it's a bit much I just use your deodorant but in in the ancient world no it was like wow this is something the scent of her was intoxicating wouldn't it be great ladies if this is how your husband thought about if maybe he does but maybe he doesn't well the first thing in your notesheets is this he will remember that you're the most amazing girl in the girl in the world where he gets the respect he needs with an asterisk there we the the idea of love and respect comes from a book but it's all it's based on a verse in Ephesians right where the husband must love his wife and she must respect her husband that's the ingredients for a great relationship now I'm I'm trying to promise you this but I do have to have an asterisk because it doesn't always work the first thing is we're talking about in generalities so the first thing that we need to know is that not every situation is gonna turn out this you know perfectly it may be that your relationship is is deeply damaged right now and and and or maybe you're looking for a new relationship or something like that there's no guarantees here but but in general I have seen a lot of progress in marital counseling when these principles are taken seriously and the last thing to say is we say we're gonna say a lot of he and she but there are men out there who are much more impacted by my love and there are women who are much more impacted by respect and if that's you that's okay just switch she to he and he to she and it'll it'll still work because the dynamics of the relationship don't change so let's jump in to some text here and find out what kind of respect will make his heart swell with pride the first thing we need to think about is is work okay the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and take care of it the Lord God said it is not good
