I'm Tom, I'm the lead pastor here and we are super glad you're with us. And we are continuing our marriage series, love and respect. Today, first I'd like to say thanks to Patrick for preaching last week did a fantastic job. Patrick's our youth pastor, you just saw him, an amazing kid, just a huge heart for the Lord and he really shared a lot of cool stuff, which we're actually going to bounce off of today. So that should be pretty cool. But first, I would like us to hear from a song of songs. This is not a text that usually gets in church a lot, and that's because song of songs or you might notice song of Solomon is a book about a torrid, passionate love affair. And it seems as if the two people who are in love here, not married, but they're very handsy. And it's a little bit scandalous in places. I encourage you to read it. In fact, it was so scandalous that throughout church history, there've been a lot of theologians who've tried to make this not about a guy and a girl and sex and all that, but instead about like Jesus in the church, which is probably true, I'm not against that. But there is an element where the Bible celebrates, sexuality celebrates our relationships. And check this out. Oh, my son, just put this on me. I just put it on my butt. No, okay. So just a little background here, song of songs is probably just two regular people, right? They're young. And it's a guy and a girl, they're young and they're imagining, it's a lot of fantasy. It's a lot of like, oh, wow, wouldn't this be cool? And so this probably didn't actually happen, but this is the girl, she's imagining this. She's in bed, she's in her bedroom, whatever, and she's thinking about him. And so she says, my beloved is, oh, by the way, they're ancient people, so their sex talk is a little bit different than ours. That's okay. So if this weirds you out a little bit, I'll try to smooth it a little bit, but just imagine that this is definitely like, this is like a Hallmark movie channel moment for her. So my beloved is radiant and ruddy, outstanding among 10,000, 10,000 guys. And there he is, the light hits him and she sees him. His head is purest gold. His hair is wavy and black as a raven. His eyes are like doves by the water streams, washed in milk, mounted like jewels. We don't wash things in milk, but the ancient world was a different place. The idea, of course, is that his eyes have like, they're really, really white in the white part and they're really beautiful in the iris part, right? His cheeks are like beds of spice yielding perfume. His lips are like lilies dripping with mer. These are both very, very pungent. The idea is that he smells good because the ancient world was a very gross, smelly place, right? And so, you know, nowadays we kind of like try to get in that in-between zone where it's like, I smell okay, but I don't like, I'm not overpowering you with my aftershave or whatever. The ancient world wasn't like that.
