It's good to see all of you, it's good to be back. The title of our message today is "The Cost of Pride." Pride is something that is celebrated. It is something that is also condemned in the Bible. The root of it, it's actually the root of so many different things, and we're going to explore those today. But oftentimes, people love to correct something that someone else is going through. They see something maybe in a relationship or with a loved one, and they're so aware of it and they're just trying to help that other person grow or become better or stronger or just more mature. And I think oftentimes, we forget, as we're examining that speck in someone's eyes, that there's a log in our own. And I feel like a lot of different churches or teachers sometimes, or even parents teach lessons that they want their children to know or their spouse to know because it's really important to them that they grow. Well I kind of prepared this message because I'm hoping to grow in this message because this is for the longest time, I'd say, was a log in my own eye and I think it might be for some of us as well. So in a relationship, I don't know about you, but oftentimes when I'm speaking with my wife, 99% of the time, it's great, everything's great. We're being super sweet and kind to each other. But every now and then, we'll get into a discussion and there's a trajectory that takes place where you're in a discussion and it's good, but then someone disagrees, maybe plays the devil's advocate, which is kind of an interesting looking at that, two words, the devil's advocate. Very interesting. But they'll play that role where they're kind of disagree with something and then it'll go from a discussion to kind of like a lively debate and you're trying to, you know, see eye to eye and maybe help the other person see your perspective because of course you're right, obviously. So it goes from a discussion to a debate, almost a competition, almost like, oh no no, there's going to be a decisive winner to this conversation and it's going to be me, right? And what happens after that is it goes from discussion or conversation, discussion, debate, competition to an argument, now it's an argument, and when it's an argument, the voices get a little heated, there's a little seasoning with your words and it's really easy to get triggered by the other person or trigger the other person. And then it goes from that to just a full blown fight and oftentimes that fight, it's very dangerous because what do you do in a fight? I don't know about you, but this is for me and my wife, sometimes I taught her this term that I learned and she uses it on me all the time and I'm like aw, wish I would have never taught that. But it was the idea of moving the goalpost and the idea there is, you know, you're making a point or a discussion and you're trying to convey something and prove a point or you're defending a stance and then when the other person is able to provide an answer to that question that you put out in front of them, all of a sudden you see that field, that kick going straight through the goalpost that you set up and now you're like, actually, and then you move the goalpost over here and make it about something else, I don't know, that might resonate with some of you, where it starts at about one thing and then it turns into something else and every time you keep moving the goalposts because you don't want that kick to go through the uprights, you don't want them to ultimately win the conversation or the debate or the fight and I'm guilty of that, she's guilty sometimes but I'm definitely
