We are We're continuing our series in Hebrews and then also Genesis because a Hebrews 11 is where the author of Hebrews highlights radical faith We talk about mountain moving faith We didn't talk about that last week. I just want to say thanks to Patrick is he's leaving I think but to watch the kids But Patrick did a great job And we're gonna see more of him. So yeah, that was awesome We we're looking at mountain moving faith mountain moving faith is not the same thing There's lots of different types of faith in the Bible. So there's the simple faith that that leads to life eternal life That's childlike faith that's simple trust and belief the author of Hebrews is interested in something more radical something That is going to change our lives for ever and we've been calling that mountain moving faith And so let's look at one another one of the heroes of the Old Testament who was an exemplar of mountain moving faith And see what we can learn and take away about mountain moving faith for us today So here's Hebrews 11 by faith Abraham when called to go to a place. He would later receive as his inheritance Obeyed and went Even though he didn't know where he was going By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country He lived in tents as did Isaac and Jacob who were heirs with him in the same prop Isaac is his son Jacob's grandson For he was looking forward to the city with foundations whose architects and builder is God A couple of things to note here the author of Hebrews calls him Abraham We're gonna see in Genesis that he's called Abram there That's it's the later in Genesis God adds the hawk to his name Abraham instead of Abraham same guy Just different little difference in his name that name Abram a Abraham of his father and Ram is exalted or high and lifted up. So Abraham is the exalted father He's the the progenitor. He's the the father of the of the Hebrew people the Jewish people So even today Jewish people look and we as Christians Grafted in look at him as the as the the father the our he's where his descendants in faith Have a from the sixteenth century a painting here by Peter last and Probably the most famous painting in Western culture about this story Lassmann's famous for being the the he taught Rembrandt. So he was a Dutch Dutch painter But notice that here he's that we're gonna talk about when Abraham gets to the land There's that he goes to this tree and and out of that God appears and and notice the fear and the confusion If you can see the faces of all of the people Abraham and concluded there there's something Something's very off When God appears you would think that God apparently be encouraging and comforting But but the artist notices something that we're gonna pick out when we check out the Genesis Account something is a little Askew and so let's go back. Let's go back to Genesis 12. Look at the text that the author of Hebrews is reflecting on The Lord said to Abraham. I'm just gonna call him Abraham. That's I'm more used to that word Go from your country your people and your father's household to the land. I will show you I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you. I will make your name great. You will be a blessing I'll bless those who bless you and whoever curses you I will curse and all the peoples on the earth will be blessed through you and As Christians we know that the Abraham's most famous descendant is Jesus the Messiah Jesus of Nazareth through whom the whole world experiences the blessing and salvation of God Abraham doesn't know this He's he's just hearing God God's appearing to him out of nowhere and he's like whoa, okay So so then he goes Abraham went as the Lord told him and lot went with him I think it's nephew Abraham Abraham Abraham was 75 years old when he set out from Huron He took his wife Sarah later Sarah his nephew lot all the possessions They had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Huron when you hear people unacquiring We think as as Americans of slaves, but that's not the case
