We are continuing our Advent series, his great names today. We're basing the series in Isaiah 9, where one of those famous prophecies about Jesus is given, and we're exploring it to find out what it means. It sounds really cool, but we're sometimes curious like, what does this actually mean? And then how can that give us some guidance, some ways of living as we go through this Advent season? And so let's take a look at our main verse, and you'll see that we've highlighted today's name. For to us, a child is born, to us, a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders, and he will be called Wonderful Counselor. Last week, we suggested maybe that's better as like, Miracle Planner, or Marvel Planner, or Wonder Planner. Mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, of the greatness of his government and peace, there will be no end. Well, mighty God, it's just kind of like last week, it's weird that it gets translated this way, because the Hebrew is not the word mighty. It's gibbore, it's the word warrior, hero. You might say like a mighty warrior, sure, that could work, but it really is, you'll recall that there's no adjectives in the Hebrew, so wonderful isn't really wonderful, it's wonders, or marvels. Again, here, mighty, it's not really an adjective, it's a noun, it's warrior, warrior God, Elgebore. And if you don't believe me, I'll show you another place where this term gets translated, another prophecy about Jesus. This is from Zephaniah, three. Sing, daughter Zion, shout aloud, Israel be glad and rejoice with all your heart, daughter Jerusalem, because Yahweh has taken away your punishment, he's turned back your enemy. So Israel at this time is oppressed from other nations. And the prophet is saying, hey, there's good news, there's a time coming when Yahweh is gonna come and turn your enemy back for you. The Lord the king of Israel is with you, never again will you fear any harm. He goes on to say this. On that day, when the true king comes, when God shows up, they will say to Jerusalem, do not fear Zion, do not let your hands hang limp. The Lord your God with is with you, the mighty warrior who saves. Again, that's Gibor.
