Let's jump back into the fruit of the spirit. Today we're going to be talking about joy and peace. So let me see if we got Galatians 5 up there. Let me see if we can see that or not. We don't need it. Basically it says the fruit of the spirit, our love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, generous and self-control. And there you see joy and peace. One, joy and peace are very odd. They're very interconnected because they're the two of the fruit of the spirit. There are two attributes where it has to do with our relationship to our circumstances and our relationship with God. And let me say that again. Joy and peace both have to do with our relationship to our circumstances in the world and our relationship to God in a way that the other attributes don't. And what I mean by that is peace is not just the absence of conflict or war. So right now, apparently Hamas has launched some terror attacks into Israel, Israel's retaliating. A lot of violence, there's a war going on there. The opposite of that is peace. Yes, but that's not biblical peace. biblical peace is shalom. And it has to do with our entire life, has to do with our entire experience of life and our experience of God. Similarly, joy. Joy does not mean happy. You can be very sad and still have joy. Joy instead has something more to do with our relation to our circumstances and our relationship to God. So for example, you could be grieving deeply and yet still be deeply satisfied with the way things are. Similarly, you could be in a fight with somebody and yet be deeply satisfied, have peace in your life. So joy and peace, they're a little bit deceptive. And I think there's one place that really sums up, I mean, the ultimate, I think, text for joy and peace in the Bible, and this might surprise you. But I think it's Psalm 23. You may know this, Psalm 23 is probably the most famous text in all of scripture. And what it is is David, who was a shepherd boy, is reflecting and he's like, he's looking out at the world. He's like, this is what life should be like. This is what a life that is marked by joy and peace
