Let's turn, if you would, to First Timothy. First Timothy, chapter four. We're continuing this series, the prescription. Where Paul, the elder statesman, is writing to his young protege pastor, working in the city of Ephesus. As he pastors this church, as he leads this church, and we're mining this letter for, what does Paul want for us as a church? What is a healthy church? He's given us a wonderful profile of that. So we'll pick it up today in verse six. If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with godless myths or old wives tales, rather train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the savior of all people, and especially those who believe. Now, you might be surprised to learn that First Timothy four, six, is the first time in this letter that Paul directs a command at Timothy for Timothy personally.
He's given Timothy numerous commands throughout the letter, but it's always been too Timothy for the church. Make sure this is happening, make sure this isn't happening, that sort of thing. This time, Paul focuses his gaze on Timothy personally directly and speaks to him for him. I can picture Paul like an Italian grandma grabbing Timothy by the cheeks, pulling him close and saying, "I'll look Timothy." This is what we're to be about as pastors. This is what we're to be about.
