The Bible speaks of Jesus being the head of the church, but what does that mean for local churches? Is there a way in which local churches should be led? If so, are there qualifications for those leaders? The good news is that Jesus has not left us to figure this out on our own. We're continuing our journey through the letter of first Timothy. Prescription, specifically the prescription of a healthy church. And this morning we're looking at first Timothy three. First Timothy three, we're looking at verses one through 13. First Timothy three versus one through 13. And we're gonna look at this passage from three angles. We're gonna look at the office. Not the shell of the office. The qualifications and the purpose. The office, the qualifications and the purpose. First the office. So that word might be a bit maybe strange to us. Maybe for some of us, we know what it is, some of us we don't. But what we see is in Ephesians four is that after Christ ascended, he gave gifts to men. He gave gifts to his church. One of which are pastors and teachers. And so the office here, there are two offices that we'll see in this passage. The first one that we're gonna look at is the office of elder. The office of elder. So look at first Timothy three verse one. The saying is trustworthy. If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. So Paul says that if anyone aspires and one desires to this office, that it is a noble task. It is a good work that God has given to people in the church. This was something similar to what Paul tells Titus in Titus chapter one verse five. He says, this is why I left you in Crete so that you might put what remained into order and appoint elders in every town as I directed you. So God's designed for his church and for local churches is that there would be elders
