Hebrews chapter four. This chapter or this section that we'll be looking at verses one through 13 is full of rest, which is such a wonderful, wonderful word. And so we're gonna look at this. Hebrews four, one through 13 from three angles.
A threat to rest, a promise of rest, and a purpose in rest. A threat to rest, a promise of rest, and a purpose in rest. I was trying to make them all start with the same letter, but it didn't work out. So sorry to disappoint, but hopefully the sermon will be beneficial for you anyway. So first, let's look at a threat to rest. It's helpful for us to understand as we read God's word, as we hear God's word preach that context is important. That is what is going on around a passage to help us to properly interpret it. If we just jump into a passage without understanding its context, we actually can misinterpret a passage, misunderstand a passage, and then misapply a passage. And so it's helpful for us to remember that last time when we looked at chapter three, it was full of how the nation of Israel was grumbling. They were filled with grumbling, disobedience, unbelief. And so this is why the author starts off in this section in verse one with the word therefore. He's referring back to what we just looked at. Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear, lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. So he's using Israel as an example here because they fail to enter into God's rest. And we'll see even in this passage that there are layers of rest. There are different levels of rest that the author is trying to portray and help us to understand. Israel failed to enter God's rest.
