Author and Jewish Currents editor-at-large Peter Beinart returns to "Know Your Enemy" to discuss Tucker Carlson's newfound anti-Israel politics, their connection to his broader nationalist project, and how the left should think about right-wing anti-zionism.
All right. Welcome, listeners, to this very special episode of Know Your Enemy. I'm Matt Sitman, your podcast co-host, and I'm here as always with my great friend, Sam Heather Bell, to introduce an episode that we're unlocking during a little summer vacation for the Know Your Enemy boys. The dog days have arrived. That's right. Dog days of August are here, the Know Your Enemy crew, doing some traveling, taking a little R&R, but we didn't want to leave you without an episode. So which one do we decide to unlock, Sam? We're unlocking this great conversation we had with Peter Bynart in June about Tucker Carlson and the anti-Israel right, and how the left in particular should, what the left's posture should be in relation to the sort of rising anti-Israel sentiment on the right. How to distinguish between good, helpful criticisms of Israeli violence and dehumanization, and anti-Semitism, which is also growing on the right. Yes, yes. In other words, do you have to hand it to Tucker Carlson versus the Israel? Not as much as you, some people on the left might think. Not as much as them, but maybe a little bit. Yes. That's what we take up. Of course, Sam mentioned our guest is Peter Bynart, who he's the author of Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza. He's the editor at large of Jewish currents, and also is in the sub-stack game, the Bynart Notebook. Right. We referenced some of his work from his sub-stack in this conversation. It's very good. Yes, you can find it in the show notes, so do check that out. Can we get to housekeeping items, Sam? Yeah. As always, we're grateful to our partners at Descent. One thing they do for us is if you subscribe to know your enemy on our Patreon at patreon.com/knowyourenemy for $10 a month, you get access to all of our bonus episodes and the Know Your Enemy Discord and a free digital subscription to Descent, so please consider doing that. And for $5 a month, of course, you get access to all of our bonus episodes, of which this is an example. So this is what you could be hearing all the time if you're not a subscriber. As always, we want to thank Jesse Brenneman, our intrepid producer, who edited this episode when we aired it, but we should also thank Colin Wamsgamm, who edited our last episode behind the paywall, who was pigeonching for Jesse during his vacation time off. Yes. He always does such great work. We're very, very pleased that Colin can step in when Jesse's away. Thanks, Colin. Yes. And of course, thank you, Will Epstein, who does the music for the show. That's right. Shall we get to it? Yes.
