Over July 4th weekend, the Department of Justice and FBI put out a memo essentially declaring "case closed" on the matter of Jeffrey Epstein, the well-connected sex criminal and pedophile who died (apparently) by suicide in federal custody in 2019. No more files. No more questions. He killed himself and that's that. This was quite the reversal from an administration stacked with figures — like FBI director Kash Patel and his deputy Dan Bongino — who built their celebrity in MAGA circles by ginning up the Epstein conspiracy and demanding his case files be released. In February, Attorney General Pam Bondi had said the the Epstein client list was "sitting on her desk for review." Now the White House says no such list exists. And Trump wants everyone to stop talking about it.

As all this unfolded, a number of listeners wanted the KYE take on the Epstein story—so here it is. We recount some of the most salient details of the case for the uninitiated, then offer our takes on what we think really is going on, and, perhaps more importantly, assess how this might affect Trump's second term: how serious the breach between Trump and the MAGA movement is, the possible consequences of administration officials spinning stories about Hillary's emails (still!) instead of doing their actual jobs, the ongoing attacks on the basic functions of the federal government, Trump's spectacular, open corruption, and, as we all pay attention to the crisis of the day, what sending tens of billions in new funding to ICE will mean for our country.

I think one of the reasons that Trump has done such a bad job at handling this scandal, it's related to things that we talked about with Kurt Mills about the Iran-Israel situation that I wrote about in my column that was about the same thing, which is that Trump doesn't really understand how the MAGA media universe is organized anymore. He more or less just watches Fox, and he doesn't listen to the podcasts, and he's aware that there's all these people who support him, but he's not really plugged into it. He doesn't really get that there's all these people who have made a lot of money and a career for themselves and have a huge audience, so they may be loyal to Trump, but this is a red line that they can't cross without losing their audience. So they have a financial incentive that's in conflict with Trump's desire for everyone to just shift on a dime the way they normally do. Like there's so many things that Trump can do where his propagandists will just massage it so that it seems like what they always thought. And this is the first one where it's like, "No, you can't do this. They can't do it maybe to give them credit because they really think it matters, they've convinced themselves that it's a serious issue and that Trump was elected to uproot the pedophile cabal, but also because if they do, they could compromise their source of income. They're captured by their audience. The thing about MAGA is that it's like, yes, it's a political movement, but it's also just a way for a lot of people to get attention and make money. And most of the time, that is completely compatible with just defending Trump at every turn. And this is a rare issue where they are in conflict, they're in contradiction. I also think that it can't be underestimated that Elon is obviously on the outs and biddered against Trump and he has an enormous amount of influence about what gets attention in the MAGA universe because they're all so addicted to Twitter. And so if this was an issue that he wanted to turn down the temperature on, he could using the algorithm, instead, I think he's turning it up. It's really interesting. So those are my two theories about why it's such a big thing. I mean, there's more to it too. I mean, like QAnon and QAnon adjacent, but the kind of basic affective climate of QAnon was a huge part of Trump's fantasy life world of Trumpism, was the idea that there's not just elites, there's not just inequality. There's like evil, demonic people who like eat and have sex with children who he alone can defeat. Yes. Yeah. You know, it's interesting, Sam. I do think QAnon has dropped out of, I don't know, kind of the discourse in some ways. Yeah. But I think you're right that it is a kind of, well, first of all, it does the most hardcore Trump fans, you know, the ones who really, what's the QAnon saying? Where we go one, we go all, you know, like, you know, would follow Trump to the ends of the earth because he is the person vanquishing this child sex trafficking operation. That's partly why the Epstein story, it was so consonant with, you know, certain basic kind of contours of the QAnon stuff. I think that the QAnon, like ideology, basically, like as the specifics of the conspiracy kind of diminished in salience, it just metastasized throughout the MAGA movement, the kind of impulses of it. Yes.
