Hello everyone and welcome to Food Safety Matters, the podcast for Food Safety Professionals. I'm Stacey Aptison, publisher of Food Safety Magazine and I'm here with Barbara Van Renterham, editorial director of the magazine, and once again our digital editor Tiffany Mayberry's back with us. It was only two episodes but we really missed you Tiffany. I guess it was good practice because for those of you who don't know, well let's see which is probably most of you, Tiffany is pregnant. Well quite pregnant with her first child who just for the record is yet to be named. So we're going to be missing her again in September and October when she's out on maternity leave but we're glad to have you back for now Tiffany. I'm glad to be back and by the way you guys did a great job covering news and trends while I was gone so thank you for that. Well we had to really reach because you set the bar you know. Okay so for today's interview we will hear Barbara's discussion with Joe Corby. Joe is the executive director of the Association of Food and Drug Officials or Afto. Afto is well it's the FDA of the state and local level and we will be responsible for many of the Food Safety Modernization Act or FISMA inspections that take place. They are FDA's booths on the ground and are playing a pivotal role in the implementation of FISMA. Joe is a frequent presenter at Food Safety Conferences and author of several articles in Food Safety magazine and we're very pleased to have him join the podcast today. But to start and since we're just back from attending the International Association of Food Protection or IAFP's annual conference in Tampa we thought we'd give you a little bit of a wrap-up of this year's event. Tiffany why don't you get us started. Sure so this year IAFP attracted just over 3,600 attendees. There are also 185 exhibiting companies 42 of which were exhibiting for the very first time at IAFP and attendees were able to learn at more than 1,100 presentations. This year's IAFP annual meeting also marked the 25th year that David Tharp has been with the organization. He started in the summer of 1993 as IAFP's finance director and he planned to go back to his day job as a certified public accountant but he never left saying that he enjoyed working with so many people who were so passionate about the work they do every day. In 97 he was tasked with growing IAFP's membership while still managing the organization's finances. All in all he managed to turn what was supposed to be a seasonal summer job into quite an impressive 25 year career. Well thanks to the folks at Food Safety News for writing the story that that they put together about David Tharp. Just so nice to acknowledge such a great tenure. David is one of the nicest guys and has just done an outstanding job leading that organization and and and the show the conference just continues to grow year after year so it's it's a great event. The IAFP annual meeting kicked off with the launch of the Dave Thino Fellowship along with the posthumous presentation of the Stop Food Born Illness Food Safety Hero Award. Both acknowledgments were in honor of Dave Thino our very first podcast guest who tragically passed away just over one month ago. Stop Food Born Illness a non-profit group had already planned to honor Dave with this award prior to his untimely death. After the news of his death was confirmed the group decided to rename the annual honor and memory of Dave. Dave's wife along with other family members were present to
