>> Hey, welcome to Coast, I'm Tom, I'm Lead Pastor here and we are super glad you're with us today. We're starting a new series today called Reverse the Curse and it's going to be primarily a look at Genesis 3 where we -- maybe you've heard that there was this curse that we're all living under and maybe you've heard that that's -- maybe you've heard nothing about that, maybe you've heard a lot of things about it. What we're going to be looking at, though, because I think what we're going to see today as we introduce this series is that there is something deeply wrong with the world. But what it is, we misperceive. And we do that because we mistake what's out there for the real problem. And we're going to see this happen in Genesis, we're going to be kind of bouncing around, there's a number of different places that we're going to be. But today we're talking primarily about the fig leaves, and if you're not familiar with the story, maybe you're not sure what the fig leaves are, but I want you to just kind of go with it and see what it is that Adam and Eve, the first people, I guess, who had a problem with God, how they respond to that, what they do, what happens to them. And then let's see how that is impacting us and then what God is doing about it. So the first thing I want us to take away when we're thinking through all of this, is that the first thing that they do wrong is that they try to be God. And when any of us tries to be God, it shows us that we're naked. Because the first thing I want you to take away is trying to be God shows us that we're naked. And let's begin in Genesis 3 and read together the snake said to the woman, did God really say that you shouldn't eat from any tree in the garden? The woman said to the snake, we may eat the fruit of the garden's trees, but not the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden. God said don't eat from it and don't touch it or you will die. The snake said to the woman you're not going to die. God knows that on the day you eat from it, you will see clearly and you will be like God knowing good and evil. The woman saw the tree was beautiful and delicious food and that the tree would provide wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it, gave something to her husband who was whether he ate it, then they both saw clearly and knew that they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together and made garments for themselves. This is a fascinating story primarily because when we pay attention to it, the snake is only half-lying to Eve, right? The snake is like, oh you're not going to die, that's not true. But then he follows that up with something that's very true. He says you will see clearly and you will be like God knowing good and evil. There is a fact that happens and we see that at the end. They both saw clearly, Adam and Eve, once they decide to do what God says not to do, once they decide that they know better than God, once they decide that they're going to take God's place in a way, once they decide that they're in charge of the situation and the fruit looks good and they're going to get this awesome benefit, once that happens, they get that awesome benefit and it turns out that awesome benefit was awful. They get to be like God. They decide to be like God, they get to be like God and it turns out that's not as good as they expected. Now they can see all around, they've been living in a world where we're not exactly sure why they don't perceive what's happening, but it might be something like this.
