This is Journey Joe Mitchell, and you're listening to Travel Is Back, your guide to amazing destinations for regular folks like you and me. Today, we're exploring a hidden gem right in the heart of Los Angeles County, the beautiful Santa Monica Canyon. Now, I know what you're thinking. Joe, we've all heard of Santa Monica Beach. What's so special about the canyon? Well, buckle up because we're about to dive into a world of Hollywood history, stunning natural beauty, and some seriously cool hiking trails that'll make you forget you're just a stone's throw from the bustling city. Let's start with a quick overview. Santa Canyon is nestled between the Pacific Palisades and Santa Monica, right where the Santa Monica Mountains meet the Pacific Ocean. It's a lush, green oasis that's been a favorite retreat for Hollywood stars and nature lovers alike for decades. First things first, how do you get to this slice of paradise? If you're driving, take Pacific Coast Highway and turn inland on Chautauqua Boulevard. You'll start climbing into the canyon and trust me, the views are worth it. If you're using public transit, you can take the Metro Expo line to downtown Santa Monica and then hop on a big blue bus heading towards the Palisades. Now let's talk about one of the coolest attractions in the area, the Mash site. That's right, folks. We're talking about the hit TV show Mash, which ran from 1972 to 1983. The outdoor scenes for the show were filmed right here in Malibu Creek State Park, which is just a short drive from Santa Monica Canyon. To get there, head north on Las Vergenus Road from the 101 Freeway. Once you're in the park, follow the signs to the Mash site. It's about a four mile round trip hike, but don't worry, it's relatively easy and the payoff is huge. When you arrive at the site, you'll find yourself standing in the exact spot where Hawkeye, Trapper John, and the rest of the 407-7 spent their days saving lives and cracking jokes. The set is long gone, but you'll find some remnants like an old army jeep and some informational plaques that'll transport you right back to the Korean War, or at least Hollywood's version of it. Pro-tip, bring a picnic lunch and enjoy it at one of the tables near the site. It's a great way to soak in the atmosphere and imagine yourself as part of the Mash gang. But wait, there's more Hollywood magic in these hills. Just a short distance from the Mash site, you'll find another iconic filming location, the spot where parts of the original Planet of the Apes movie were filmed in 1968. The famous scene where Charlton Heston's character discovers the half-buried statue of Liberty was shot at nearby Point Doom State Beach. While you won't find any ape statues or post-apocalyptic remnants, the rugged coastline and dramatic cliffs will make you feel like you've stepped onto an alien planet. To get there from Santa Monica Canyon, head north on Pacific Coast Highway for about 20 miles. Once you reach Point Doom, park in the lot and take the trail to the top of the bluff. The views are absolutely breathtaking. And on a clear day, you might even spot some whales or dolphins. Now let's talk about some of the amazing hiking trails in and around Santa Monica Canyon. One of my personal favorites is the Lasleonas Trail. This 3.4 mile out-and-back trail offers stunning ocean views and a good workout. Start at the Lasleonas Trailhead off Sunset Boulevard and prepare for some switchbacks as you climb up into the Santa Monica Mountains. This 2.6 mile loop takes you through a shady canyon and rewards you with beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean. There's even a seasonal waterfall if you visit after some rain. If you're up for a challenge, tackle the backbone trail. This epic 67-mile trail spans the entire length of the Santa Monica Mountains, but don't worry, you don't have to hike the whole thing. You can access portions of it from various points near Santa Monica Canyon for a taste of this incredible trail system. Of course, no visit to Santa Monica Canyon would be complete without some beach time. Will Rogers State Beach is right at the base of the canyon and offers a perfect stretch of sand for sunbathing, volleyball, or just watching the waves roll in. For a more secluded experience, head to the nearby El Matador State Beach. It's a bit of a trek down a steep staircase, but the dramatic rock formations and hidden caves make it well worth the effort. It's also a popular spot for photographers, especially during sunset. There's only one feeling like knowing your banker personally, like growing up with a bank you can count on, like being sure what you've earned is safe, secure, and local. There's only one feeling like knowing you're supporting your community. You deserve more from a bank, you deserve an institution that stood strong for generations. Bank of Colorado, there's only one member FDIC. Hello, it is Ryan, and we could all use an extra bright spot in our day, couldn't we? Just to make up for things like sitting in traffic, doing the dishes, counting your steps, you know, all the mundane stuff. That is why I'm such a big fan of Chumba Casino. First up, we've got the Eames house, also known as Case Study House number eight. This architectural marvel was designed and built in 1949 by Charles and Ray Eames, two of the most influential designers of the 20th century. Located at 203 Chautauqua Boulevard, this stunning example of mid-century modern architecture is a must-see for design enthusiasts. While the interior is only open for pre-book tours, you can admire the exterior and beautiful grounds anytime. Trust me, it's like stepping into a living museum of modern design. Next, let's talk about the Rustic Canyon Recreation Center. This hidden oasis in the heart of the canyon is perfect for families or anyone looking to enjoy some outdoor activities. With tennis courts, a playground, and plenty of grassy areas for picnics, it's a great spot to unwind after a day of hiking. They even offer various classes and programs throughout the year, so check their schedule. You might catch a yoga session or an art workshop. For those of you with a sweet tooth, and let's be honest, who doesn't have one? You've got to make a stop at Sweet Rose Creamery on Sunset Boulevard. This isn't your average ice cream shop, folks. They use organic dairy from a local family-owned farm and make all their ice creams, toppings, and cones from scratch daily. With flavors like Earl Grey Tea, Fresh Mint Chip, and Salted Caramel, you'll be in dessert heaven. Pro-tip, try their ice cream sandwiches. They're to die for. Last, but not least, if you're visiting in the summer, don't miss the Rustic Canyon Fine Arts Festival. This annual event, usually held in August, transforms the canyon into an open-air art gallery. Local artists display their work, and you can find everything from paintings and sculptures to handmade jewelry and ceramics. It's a fantastic way to soak up some local culture, and maybe even take home a unique souvenir. Plus, there's usually live music and food trucks, making it a perfect day out for art lovers and foodies alike. All this exploring is bound to work up an appetite, so let's talk about some great local spots to grab a bite. In the heart of Santa Monica Canyon, you'll find the Canyon Country Store. This charming little market has been serving the community since the 1930s, and is a great spot to pick up sandwiches or snacks for your hike. For a sit-down meal with a view, head to the Sunset Restaurant right on the beach. It's the perfect spot to watch the sun dip into the Pacific while enjoying some fresh seafood. If you're in the mood for something more casual, swing by Patrick's Roadhouse on Pacific Coast Highway. This quirky diner is a local institution known for its hearty breakfast and eclectic decor. As we wrap up our tour of Santa Monica Canyon and its surrounding attractions, I hope you're feeling inspired to explore this amazing area for yourself. From Hollywood history at the mash site and planet of the apes filming location to the natural beauty of the hiking trails and beaches, there's truly something for everyone. Remember the best way to experience Santa Monica Canyon is to take your time. Plan for a full day or even better a weekend, to really soak in all the area has to offer. Start your morning with a hike, spend the afternoon at the beach, and cap off your day with a stunning sunset view from one of the many overlooks. And hey, if you're visiting during the warmer months, don't forget to pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat. The California sun can be intense, especially when you're out on the trails.
