If you're on the left and you've spent time on the internet in the past few weeks, you've probably observe or participated in debates about the strategic value and moral status of voting in the 2024 election: Is it okay to vote for Kamala Harris even though her administration is complicit in a genocide? Is voting an exercise in signaling one's moral convincetions and identity? Or merely a tactical decision calculated to create better or worse terrain on which to organize in the future? Or is it something else altogether?

Perhaps these debates have stimulated you; perhaps they've filled you with despair; or perhaps (like Sam) they've driven you nuts. The intention of this conversation — with three of my favorite writers and thinkers — is to help us see further: past the stale categories and tendentious arguments that leave us, on the left, feeling frustrated and mistrustful, rather than mobilized and oriented toward a future beyond November 5th.

Our guests include: Astra Taylor, filmmaker, writer, organizer, and cofounder of The Debt Collective; author and organizer Malcolm Harris; and Olúfẹ́mi Táíwò, author, political philosopher, and co-editor of Hammer & Hope — a new magazine of black politics and culture.

Welcome listeners to a very special bonus episode of Know Your Enemy. I'm your co-host Sam Adler Bell I'm unfortunately not here with Matthew Sittman, my great friend because he's abroad He's in Germany giving lectures about God knows what but I am here to introduce a very interesting Podcast that I recorded with some very brilliant thinkers and writers about how should we put it the great voting debate I'm sure if you've been online lately, you've seen Lots of people on the left having sort of anguished and sometimes angry conversations about What it means to vote for Kamala Harris, especially given the ongoing genocide Which the Biden Harris administration is complicit in and which she has shown almost no indication of changing course on in the course of her campaign, but also this sort of normal anguished conversation about what it means to Vote for Democrats Authorizing the two-party system whether it makes sense to try to vote for a third party I of course don't think so You'll hear lots of that in the conversation But I think that the people that I have this conversation with some of them are more sympathetic to the moral and strategic conundrums of voting for Kamala Harris in this election perhaps more than I am and then you are but I think Surfacing the best versions of these arguments and then having a serious conversation about it amongst friends and comrades was a kind of way for me to stop feeling the despair and Frustration that I was feeling watching these debates play out online where they play out Not usually in good faith often with a lot of suspicion a lot of unnecessary contempt and moral outrage at you know small differences of tactical strategic vision on the part of people who basically share The same hopes and dreams for the future We had a much better conversation than the ones I've seen on Twitter, and I'm excited to share it with you Here's that conversation now All right, Femi Taiwo, Astra Taylor, Malcolm Harris, welcome to Know Your Enemy. Thanks. Thanks for having us. Yeah, good to be here Thanks for being here, so I'm just gonna ask each of you to say a little bit about yourselves and your work So that our listeners know who you are and hopefully can recognize your voices as we have this conversation Astra you want to go first? Yeah, my name is Astra Taylor I am an occasional writer occasional documentary filmmaker and one of the co-founders of the debt collective Which is an experimental union of debtors that has helped leave the charge for the abolition of student debt medical debt and other forms of indebtedness and I usually write make films about political philosophy. I'm Femi Taiwo. I am a Teacher of Philosophy at Georgeton University, and I edit hammer in hope with Astra. Thank you. Malcolm I'm an author of a few books, and I just moved to the state of Pennsylvania So I'm between political organizational affiliations But a resident of the state of Pennsylvania, which I think will be relevant for our current conversation a resident swing state voter Well, I am very happy that all three of you are here. You're some of my favorite writers and thinkers Sometimes my favorite Twitter antagonists Malcolm, you know, it's rare that on this podcast There's a conversation going on online, and then we directly transport that into the podcast But in this case that is sort of what is happening my hope is that we can have a kind of much more robust Philosophical thoughtful self-searching conversation about voting and the 2024 election in this space Then we are able to have online and I'm very grateful for you guys agreeing to Join me in this endeavor to begin with I feel like people who listen to This podcast know where I stand and where Matt stands on this election, you know we basically feel that people should vote for Harris because Trump will be a lot worse on every issue that matters to us and because a Harris administration is Preferable terrain on which to organize on those issues and our listeners people are listening will know this You know, we spend like all of our time paying very close attention to the right to what they want for the country to right-wing imagination what they desire and dream about for the country and that also sort of adds to the Urgency that we especially feel that Trump and the far-right represent a distinctive kind of threat including a threat to democracy
