Rødhåd and .Vril’s second collaborative LP is a continuation of their previous 2020 album in exploring artefacts that exist inexplicably out of their time and place. It is a fascinating album of lush, intricate, and meditative sound that has fun playing with genre, structure, and the sonic codes that locate music in social space. From the spacious, dubby drum & bass inflections of ‘Nimbus MM’ to the jittery, anxious techno of ‘Nibiru,’ there is a lot to explore on this album. Premiering here, ‘Vanitas’ kicks off with synth organ arpeggios and refractions that sound as if listening passively to the ambiance of a video game arcade before being joined by a sci-fi epic style lead. ‘Vanitas’ then soon descends into a riotous jam of distortion, pummeling, industrial drums, and overdriven bass. It is a very dense track that packs a wonderful sense of drama, tension, and release into a confined space. A little ripper of a tune.
